Wagner rebellion in Russia

Wagner mercenary forces led by the group’s founder Yevgeny Prigozhin advanced on Moscow on Saturday to stage an armed rebellion against Russian military leadership.

Prigozhin–who served as Putin’s caterer before forming the state-backed mercenary group in 2014–led his forces within 120 miles of the Russian capital before retreating. In a TV address, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the rebellion “a criminal adventure” and accused Prigozhin of treason. The Wagner group aborted the march after Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko brokered a deal. The deal saw all criminal charges against Prigozhin dropped. In exchange, he agreed to go into exile in Belarus.

This weekend’s events came amid a counteroffensive that Kyiv launched to take back seized territories. While Prigozhin’s forces have fought alongside Russian forces since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, tensions have been building between him and Russian leadership. A day before the rebellion, he accused the Russian military of launching missile strikes on his troops.

Yellowstone River train crash

A bridge that crosses the Yellowstone River in Montana collapsed on Saturday, plunging portions of a freight train carrying hazardous materials into the water.

According to officials from Stillwater County Disaster and Emergency Services, three rail cars carrying hot asphalt and four carrying molten sulfur fell into the river around 6 AM local time near the town of Columbus when the bridge collapsed. Two of the train’s cars contained sodium hydrogen sulfate but didn’t land in the river, per a statement from Montana Rail Link, the company that operates the railroad. The area where the accident occurred is surrounded by ranch and farmland. The river there flows away from Yellowstone National Park, which is about 110 miles southwest.

Saturday’s bridge collapse comes less than one month after the Federal Railroad Administration said it will investigate the safety culture and policies of all the major freight railroads over the next year following several train derailments this year.

Elton John closes Glastonbury

Sir Elton John headlined the 2023 Glastonbury Festival in what he said might be his “last show in England,” performing for a crowd of an estimated 120K attendees last night.

During his two-hour set, John was accompanied by Jacob Lusk of the Gabriels on the song “Are You Ready for Love,” and Rina Sawayama sang in place of Kiki Dee on “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” Brandon Flowers–singer for the rock band The Killers–joined him for a duet of “Tiny Dancer,” and John dedicated “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” to George Michael on what would have been the singer’s 60th birthday.

The performance came toward the end of John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which is the highest-grossing tour of all time with box office receipts of $887M to date. After Glastonbury, there are seven dates left. The final show will take place in Stockholm on July 8th.

Harvard & mushrooms

Harvard’s nutrition website tells us something hugely important: Studies have shown that mushrooms contain substances renowned for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects.

One study conducted by researchers in Australia showed that women who ate just 10 grams of button mushrooms per day (that’s a few slices) were about two-thirds less likely to develop breast cancer than women who ate no mushrooms.

We’re just discovering all the incredible ways in which mushrooms are at the forefront of everything from medicine to mental health to planetary survival.
