Your Daily Brief

June 27th, 2023

Good morning, and happy Tuesday! Aboard the International Space Station, NASA just recycled 98% of all astronaut urine and sweat, filtering it into drinking water…and they’re stoked. Per NASA, the achievement is an important milestone for low-orbit space missions that aim to provide the basic needs of astronauts without resupply missions. Would you drink urine if it were filtered to drinkable water?

FDA guidance on psychedelics

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has published new draft guidance on investigations into psychedelic drugs such as LSD, MDMA, and psilocybin (aka magic mushrooms), detailing considerations for their clinical trials for the first time.

In a press release, FDA officials acknowledged the “growing interest in the therapeutic potential of psychedelic drugs in recent years” and that the drugs “show initial promise as potential treatments” for a variety of conditions, including substance abuse, PTSD, depression, and anxiety disorders. The new draft guidance is intended to advise researchers on aspects such as clinical study design, trial conduct, data collection, subject safety, and the potential for abuse of the drugs.

The FDA added that if the guidance does become final, researchers must comply with the DEA, which classifies LSD, MDMA, and psilocybin as Schedule I controlled substances that have a high addictive potential and have no currently accepted medical use.

Putin & Pregozhin updates

Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed his country for the first time since an alleged mutiny of Wagner mercenary troops led by the group’s founder Yevgeny Prigozhin occurred over the weekend.

During his remarks, the Russian president declared that any mutiny attempt on the country’s military leadership would have failed. He then ordered Wagner troops who participated in the rebellion to either swear allegiance to Russia or leave for Belarus, where Prigozhin is expected to go per a deal apparently brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. While he didn’t mention Prigozhin by name, Putin accused “the organizers of the rebellion” of “betraying their country, their people…and those who were drawn into the crime.”

This past weekend’s events have raised questions about Putin’s power within Russia and heightened concerns about stability in the region amid Russia’s 16-month war on Ukraine, where the Wagner Group had been fighting on Moscow’s behalf.

Battery pioneer dies at 100

John B. Goodenough, a professor who played a critical role in the development of lithium-ion batteries, passed away on Sunday at the age of 100, the University of Texas at Austin announced.

The university said in a statement that Goodenough’s discovery “led to the wireless revolution and put electronic devices in the hands of people worldwide.” Goodenough identified and developed the critical cathode materials that provided the high-energy density needed to power electronics. In 1979, he and his research team found that by using lithium cobalt oxide as the cathode of a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, it would be possible to achieve a high density of stored energy with an anode other than metallic lithium.

In 2019, he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his battery work at the age of 97, making him the oldest person ever to be given the honor. Lithium-ion batteries power countless devices such as smartphones, laptop computers, and the majority of electric vehicles.
