Supreme Court election ruling

The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that state courts do have the power to police state election laws and override state legislatures when it comes to how federal elections are carried out.

The ruling in Moore v. Harper rejects the independent state legislature theory, for which proponents argued that state legislatures can set election rules with little oversight from state courts. In a 6-3 opinion authored by Chief Justice Roberts, the court ruled that the Elections Clause of Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution “does not insulate state legislatures from the ordinary exercise of state judicial review.” Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, Brett Kavanaugh, Coney Barrett, and Brown Jackson were in the majority. Justice Thomas dissented, along with Justices Gorsuch and Alito.

The case of Moore v. Harper was brought to the Supreme Court after North Carolina’s top court struck down a congressional districting plan as excessively partisan under state laws.

Malaria in the USA

The United States has seen five cases of malaria spread by mosquitos in the last two months, marking the first time there has been local spread of the disease in the country since 2003.

Four of the cases were found in Florida and the fifth was in Texas, according to a health alert issued by the CDC, which said that “the risk of locally acquired malaria remains extremely low in the United States.” The CDC added that all of the recent cases in the U.S. have received treatment “and are improving.”

Malaria is caused by a parasite that spreads through mosquito bites. Infected people can suffer fever, chills, and flu-like illness. About 2K U.S. cases of malaria are diagnosed each year, with the majority seen in travelers coming from tropical countries where the disease commonly spreads. The outbreak in 2003 occurred in Palm Beach County, Florida, where eight cases were reported.

Wheel of Fortune taps Seacrest

Sony Pictures Television announced that Ryan Seacrest will take over hosting the game show Wheel of Fortune from longtime host Pat Sajak.

Seacrest signed a “multi-year agreement” to host the show starting in 2024, Sony Pictures Television said in a news release. He will also serve as a consulting producer. In a statement, Seacrest said, “I’m truly humbled to be stepping into the footsteps of the legendary Pat Sajak. I can say, along with the rest of America, that it’s been a privilege and pure joy to watch Pat and Vanna on our television screens for an unprecedented 40 years, making us smile every night and feel right at home with them.”

Wheel of Fortune first debuted in 1975. Sajak became the host after Chuck Woolery left the series in 1981. In June, Sajak announced his plans to retire from hosting the game show after 41 seasons.
