Top TipsPenny pleads not guiltyThe former U.S. Marine who placed a homeless man in a fatal chokehold on a New York City subway train last month pleaded not guilty to criminal charges. 24-year-old Marine veteran Daniel Penny was charged with second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in connection to the death of Jordan Neely. According to Penny and witnesses aboard the train at the time of the incident, Neely was threatening passengers and saying that he was prepared to die or go to jail for life. When speaking to police officers, Penny reportedly said, “I knew I had to act, and I acted in a way that would protect the other passengers, protect myself and protect Mr. Neely.” Per New York authorities, Neely had been arrested 42 times since 2013 and was believed to be unhoused. His most recent arrest prior to his death was in November 2021 for allegedly punching a 67-year-old female passenger as she exited a subway station. |

More unrest in FranceThe French government announced heightened police presence around Paris and other cities after violence erupted over the death of a 17-year-old delivery driver who was fatally shot during a police check. Clashes broke out between demonstrators and police overnight into yesterday after an officer killed the teenage driver on Tuesday in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. The teenager, identified as Nael M., allegedly failed to comply with a police order to stop his car. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said that 31 people have been arrested, 25 police officers were injured, and 40 cars have been burned so far in the riots. While calling for calm, French President Emmanuel Macron said, “A teenager was killed. That is inexplicable and unforgivable,” adding that the case had “moved the entire nation.” There were 13 recorded deaths from police shootings in France during traffic stops last year. The killing of Nael is the second fatal shooting in such circumstances in 2023. |

Simone Biles returns to gymnasticsFour-time gold medalist Simone Biles plans to return to competitive gymnastics at the U.S. Classic outside Chicago in early August, marking her first return to the sport in two years. Biles, the most decorated U.S. women’s gymnast ever, hasn't competed since the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics. There, she pulled out of the competition during the women's team finals due to mental health reasons. She also withdrew from the individual all-around competition and said she was experiencing what gymnasts call “the twisties,” which describes a loss of spatial awareness in the air. The U.S. ended up taking home the silver medal in the team competition, and Biles’ teammate Sunisa Lee earned the individual all-around gold. The U.S. Classic is a qualifier for the U.S. championships and comes roughly one year before the Paris Olympics. Reigning champion Sunisa Lee is also in the field for the Classic, which is set to take place August 4th-5th. |
