Affirmative action ruling

The Supreme Court ruled that colleges can no longer consider race as a factor in their admissions process, ending the decades-long practice known as affirmative action.

The court ruled 6-3 against race-conscious student admissions programs at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina. In a majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that those programs “violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment” and added that the court’s decision doesn’t prohibit universities from “considering an applicant’s discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise.” Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, and Brown Jackson dissented, saying the opinion “rolls back decades of precedent and momentous progress.”

The two cases challenging affirmative action were Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard and Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina. The high court is expected to rule on student debt forgiveness and LGBTQ protections today.

Parkland security officer verdict

Parkland school security officer Scot Peterson was acquitted over failure to confront the gunman who killed 17 in an attack on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018.

During the trial, the jury heard testimony that when the attack occurred on February 14th, 2018, Peterson stayed in an alcove adjacent to the school building for 30 or 40 minutes until the shooting stopped. Peterson, the school’s armed resource officer at the time of the attack, had been charged with 11 total counts, including seven counts of neglect of a child, three counts of culpable negligence, and one count of perjury. He was found not guilty on all counts yesterday.

Peterson is believed to be the first U.S. school security officer charged with failing to respond to a school shooting, per the National Association of School Resource Officers. Had he been convicted, he could have faced a sentence of up to 97 years in prison.

Wozniacki returns to tennis

Three years after retiring from professional tennis, former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki announced she would be returning to the sport.

In an essay she penned for Vogue magazine in which she announced her return, Wozniacki said that she did not pick up a racket for two years after her last match in 2020, a time in which she and her husband David Lee–a former NBA player–traveled around the world and had two children. Wozniacki also wrote: “How long will I be able to play at my highest level – a year, two years, three years? I don’t know. But I know that five years from now, when the kids are in school, it will be too late.”

Wozniacki, 32, clinched 30 titles on the WTA Tour and broke through at the 2018 Australian Open for her only Grand Slam title. Since retiring, she has worked as a commentator and analyst for ESPN and Tennis Channel.
