Supreme Court rulings recap

The Supreme Court ended last week by voting to strike down President Biden’s student debt relief plan.

Under Biden’s plan, borrowers who qualified would have been forgiven for debt up to $10K for individuals who make under $125K per year, or $20K for Pell Grant recipients. The 6-3 vote to strike down Biden’s student debt plan–which saw Justices Brown Jackson, Kagan, and Sotomayor dissent–capped a week of rulings that included upholding the power of state courts to override state legislatures in federal elections, declaring affirmative action in college admissions unconstitutional, and upholding that a graphic designer for wedding websites can refuse to work with same-sex couples on the grounds of the First Amendment.

The court is now on summer recess and will reconvene on the first Monday of October to begin its yearly term. During the intervening recess, the Justices study the argued and forthcoming cases and work on their opinions.

Flying cars are coming

The first flying car has officially been cleared for testing in the United States.

Flying vehicle startup Alef Aeronautics revealed its electric flying car “Model A” was granted permission from the Federal Aviation Administration to test run on the road and in the sky. In a press release, Alef said it is the first company to receive a Special Airworthiness Certification from the FAA. The certification limits the locations and purpose for which the vehicle is allowed to fly.

Per Alef, the Model A has a 200-mile driving range and a flight range of 110 miles. After presales began last October for $300K, Alef says it collected over 440 reservations by the end of the year. The company is also developing additional models, including a four-person sedan, “Model Z,” slated to debut in 2035, with a starting price of $35K. Alef claims it will have an over 300-mile flying range with an over 220-mile driving range.

Apple hits a new milestone

After Friday’s stock market session, Apple is now the first publicly-traded company to close above a market value of $3T or more.

Shares of the company (NASDAQ: AAPL) climbed 2.31% higher on Friday to hit a new high of $193.97. The tech company reached a $3T market cap in January 2022, though it failed to close at that level. This week’s milestone valuation came the same month as it announced the launch of the Apple Vision Pro, its augmented reality (AR) headset.

Apple was founded in 1976 and went public in 1980. Its stock has risen 46% this year; in 2022, it lost about 27% of its value. Earlier this year, Apple’s market cap fell below $2T for the first time since early 2021. The company’s market cap first topped $2T in August 2021, which occurred about two years after it reached $1T for the first time.
