Hollywood actors strike

The national board of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or SAG-AFTRA, voted unanimously to go on strike after its contract with the producers’ union expired at 11:59 PM PT on Wednesday.

The decision to strike by SAG-AFTRA–representing over 160K Hollywood actors–comes alongside a strike by the Writers Guild of America that has been ongoing since May. The “double strike” by both actors and writers’ unions–demanding better pay, working conditions, and higher royalty rates for productions on streaming services–is the first of its kind since 1960, when former U.S. President Ronald Reagan led SAG. A third union, the Directors Guild of America, successfully negotiated a contract in June and won’t participate.

A Hollywood strike involving writers and performers will likely halt the production of most movies and television shows. See a list of some of the productions that will be affected.

Over-the-counter birth control

The Food and Drug Administration approved the first over-the-counter birth control pill in the U.S., an oral contraceptive called the “Opill.”

According to a press release from the FDA, Opill is “the first daily oral contraceptive approved for use in the U.S. without a prescription.” The FDA added that approval of Opill–which contains the hormone progestin only–gives consumers the option to “purchase oral contraceptive medicine without a prescription at drug stores, convenience stores and grocery stores, as well as online.” The agency’s decision to make Opill available without a prescription came two months after an FDA advisory panel unanimously voted to recommend the contraceptive be available over the counter in the U.S.

The FDA first approved Opill’s use as a prescription in 1973. The U.S. joins more than 100 countries around the world that have made it available over the counter, including most countries in Latin America, as well as India, China, and the U.K.

A possible end to AIDS

UNAID, a UN agency dedicated to ending the AIDS epidemic, announced yesterday that the disease can be eliminated by 2030 if countries take the “correct steps.”

In a press release from the agency, they state that eliminating HIV/AIDs is possible if “countries demonstrate the political will to invest in prevention and treatment and adopt non-discriminatory laws.” The agency said the greatest success rates in terms of reducing HIV—the virus that causes AIDS if left untreated—are seen in the countries and regions that have invested the most to combat it. For instance, UNAID cited recent progress in eastern and southern Africa, where new HIV infections have dropped by 57% since 2010.

Per data from UNAID, AIDS-related illnesses have killed nearly 40.4M people around the world since the first reported cases surfaced in 1981. Overall, the number of AIDS-related deaths has fallen by 69% since peaking in 2004.
