Earthquake in Alaska

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami advisory for southern Alaska Saturday night, but the advisory was canceled about an hour later, according to local reports.

According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, the earthquake was felt throughout the Aleutian Islands, the Alaskan Peninsula, and Cook Inlet regions. The quake initially was reported as 7.4 magnitude but was later downgraded to 7.2. Officials estimated that there were eight aftershocks, including one measuring 5.0 magnitude within three minutes of the original earthquake.

Alaska is the most seismically active state in America and experiences thousands of earthquakes each year, most of which are too deep and too small to be felt. In 1964, the second-largest earthquake ever recorded with a magnitude of 9.2 occurred in Alaska, leaving 131 people dead and causing an estimated $311M in property damages (in 1964 currency value).

Iranian morality police

Iran’s “morality police” will resume enforcement patrols for women including making sure that they cover their hair in public and abide by the country’s dress code, per reports from state media.

Iran’s morality police are tasked with warning women to correct the way they are dressed. This ranges from ordering women to adjust headscarves to demanding a change of clothing to something deemed more appropriate under Iranian law. Women deemed to be in breach of the rules may be arrested and taken to “re-education facilities” run by the police.

The resumption comes 10 months after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in custody following her arrest for allegedly breaking the dress code. Her death triggered protests throughout Iran and the patrols were subsequently paused. More than 500 demonstrators were killed and nearly 20K were arrested in the country’s crackdown on protests. It was the biggest public challenge to the rule of the clerics in Iran since the 1979 revolution.

Wimbledon results

Wimbledon 2023 concluded yesterday in England with 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz defeating seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic and Marketa Vondrousova beating Ons Jabeur in the men’s and women’s finals, respectively.

The men’s finals match began with Djokovic clinching the first set, but Alcaraz bested the veteran player in the rest, stopping Djokovic from securing 24 Grand Slam titles (he currently holds a record 23). The match lasted four hours and 42 minutes, the third-longest final in Wimbledon history. Meanwhile, Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to clinch the Wimbledon title on Saturday, coming back in each set for a 6-4 victory over 2022 runner-up Ons Jabeur in the women’s final.

Wimbledon is one of four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, including the Australian Open, the French Open, and the U.S. Open. Roger Federer currently holds the men’s record for most Wimbledon titles (8), while Martina Navratilova holds the women’s and overall record for most Wimbledon titles (9).
