Top TipsRussia halts grain dealRussia pulled out of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, a deal that allowed grain to flow from Ukraine to countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia hours before the agreement was set to lapse. The Black Sea Grain Initiative was a set of agreements brokered by the UN and Turkey last year after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and blockade of Black Sea ports which resulted in food prices increasing. Under the deal, more than 1K ships carrying nearly 33M metric tons of agricultural products have departed from Ukraine, as well as over 725K tons of wheat. Following Russia’s announcement, wheat prices jumped 3.5%. In 2019, Russia and Ukraine together exported more than a quarter (25.4%) of the world’s wheat, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity. When the agreement was originally signed in July 2022, the UN reported that about 47M people were suffering “acute hunger” amid global food shortages and rising prices. |

Alabama tugboat sinksA sunken tugboat in northern Alabama released diesel fuel into the Tennessee River over the weekend, prompting evacuations of beaches and warnings to stay out of the water. After the tugboat sank, it began releasing between 3K to 5K gallons of diesel fuel into the river. According to local police, no one was aboard the boat at the time of sinking and it remains unclear what caused it to go down. Local officials said that there haven’t been negative effects on aquatic organisms documented so far and added that the spill did not impact the City of Florence's drinking water treatment plants, both of which are upstream from the impacted area. It is unclear what the environmental impacts will be from the spillage. In the meantime, a cleanup process is ongoing by multiple agencies including the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, Florence Police and Fire Departments, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Patrol. |

Sailor & dog rescued at seaAn Australian sailor and his dog were rescued after being stranded for nearly three months in the Pacific Ocean and surviving on only raw fish and rainwater. 51-year-old Tim Shaddock and his dog Bella departed La Paz, Mexico, for French Polynesia in April, but their boat was damaged by a storm several weeks later. All electronics went down, rendering him unable to communicate with the outside world. Shaddock said he avoided sunburn by sheltering under his boat's canopy while they were drifting in the North Pacific Ocean, and that fishing gear helped him and his dog survive. This week, they were rescued by a tuna trawler after a helicopter accompanying the trawler spotted them. A doctor who treated Shaddock on the trawler told news outlets that his vital signs were stable and that he was in good spirits. Shaddock will receive more medical assistance in Mexico, and his dog is also reported to be safe and well. |
