Mass marches in Israel

Over 100K people in Israel protested over the weekend to oppose a bill introduced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that would curtail the Supreme Court’s powers.

The protests took place over four days, with some demonstrators completing a 43-mile trek from Tel Aviv to Israel’s parliament in Jerusalem. There were also marches in other cities such as Beersheba, Haifa, and Netanya. Israel’s parliament is expected to vote today on the bill, which would prevent judges from striking down government decisions on the basis that they are “unreasonable.” Proponents say judges currently have excessive powers over decision making by elected officials, while critics argue that the bill is being rushed through parliament and will open the door to abuse of power.

Amid the protests, Netanyahu was hospitalized yesterday for an emergency implantation of a pacemaker, which doctors confirmed was successful. Before the surgery, Netanyahu said he planned to push forward with the bill as soon as he was released.

Twitter logo rebrand

Elon Musk announced on Twitter that the app's decade-old logo of a small blue bird will be replaced with a new, yet-to-be-decided logo featuring an “X.”

In a series of tweets yesterday, Musk stated that “soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.” This is the latest effort to phase out Twitter’s branding, following an announcement in April that Twitter’s official name would be changed to “X.” Musk has previously expressed the desire to transform Twitter into a “super app,” or one that houses multiple functions, like direct messaging, payments, and video streaming.

Last Tuesday, a lawsuit was filed against Twitter, alleging that it owed at least $500M in severance pay to former employees. Over half of the company’s workforce was laid off to cut costs after Musk acquired the app for $44B last year. Musk has also revealed that revenue from advertising is down 50% over the past year.

Barbenheimer box office results

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer both debuted this past weekend, with the event of the feature films’ dual release colloquially being called “Barbenheimer.”

The fantasy-comedy Barbie–starring Margot Robbie as Mattel’s titular fashion doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken–earned a domestic box office haul of $155M to land the biggest debut of the year. Nolan’s Cillian Murphy-led historical drama Oppenheimer, meanwhile, collected $80.5M in its opening weekend. This weekend marked the first time that one movie opened to more than $100M and another opened to more than $80M in the same weekend. In North America, Barbie scored the biggest domestic start ever for a movie directed by a woman, solo or otherwise.

Barbie and Oppenheimer were the last films of 2023 to get a global press tour prior to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Oppenheimer pushed up its London premiere by an hour since its actors would have to leave to symbolically join the picket lines.
