Trump indicted again

Former President Trump was indicted by a grand jury convened by special counsel Jack Smith yesterday over alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Trump was charged with four counts, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S., conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. These new charges come as Trump continues his campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. He has been ordered to appear in federal court in Washington D.C. for his arraignment on Thursday, August 3rd.

This is the second federal indictment the former president faces out of Smith’s investigation. In June, he pleaded not guilty to 37 felony counts in a probe related to retaining classified information and obstruction of justice. He now faces 40 counts in that case, according to a superseding indictment last week.

Job cuts at CVS

CVS Health is cutting 5K corporate jobs nationwide to reduce costs as the retail pharmacy chain furthers its push into healthcare offerings, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The transformation to provide more comprehensive health services to customers has been ongoing for several years. In 2017, CVS acquired health insurer Aetna for a reported $69B. In February, it announced plans to purchase Oak Street Heath, a network of senior-focused clinics. On top of the layoffs, CVS is also reportedly cutting down on its use of consultants and vendors, and reducing travel expenses.

According to a securities filing, CVS had about 300K employees in the U.S. at the end of 2022. Last year, the company began closing hundreds of its retail locations as part of a plan it announced in November 2021 to reduce store density. The plan involves closing 900 of its 10K locations over a three-year period, with 300 stores shuttering each year.

NASA hears from Voyager 2

NASA was able to detect a signal from Voyager 2 after losing contact with the spacecraft, which has been operating for nearly 46 years.

Last month, Voyager 2 tilted its antenna to point two degrees away from Earth after a wrong command was sent. The shift meant the spacecraft could not receive any commands from mission control or send data back to Earth from its location about 12.3B miles away. However, NASA’s network of global radio antennas picked up a “heartbeat signal” yesterday, meaning Voyager 2 is still operational.

Along with its twin, Voyager 1, Voyager 2 entered space in 1977 on a quest to explore the outer planets. NASA will now attempt to send a signal back to the spacecraft. If the Earth-based signals don’t reach Voyager 2, it is already programmed to reorient itself multiple times a year to keep its antenna pointing in our planet’s direction.
