Trump pleads not guilty

Former President Trump pleaded not guilty yesterday to all federal charges stemming from Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into 2020 election interference.

Trump entered his plea yesterday afternoon during an arraignment hearing at the Barrett Prettyman United States Courthouse in Washington, DC. U.S. Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhaya presided over the proceedings. The former president is charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. Trump denied wrongdoing following every count against him.

The next hearing in the case was set for August 28, five days after the first Republican presidential primary debate. Several polls show Trump as the current front-runner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary. This is the third time since launching his 2024 campaign that the former president has been indicted. Between all three cases, Trump faces a combined 78 criminal charges.

Stabbings in Seoul

An attack in the town of Seongnam near the South Korean capital of Seoul yesterday left 12 people injured and one dead, according to local police.

Four people were injured when the attacker drove his car onto the sidewalk. He then got out and began stabbing people nearby, injuring nine others. Those targeted are thought to have been random. All of those injured were taken to hospital and the suspect was arrested at the scene. The National Police Agency announced that it would hold a future meeting to discuss how to address stabbings and attacks on random targets.

The attack follows another stabbing spree in the South Korean capital on July 21st that left three wounded and one dead. Murders in South Korea are uncommon, with a homicide rate of 1.3 per 100K people. By comparison, the United States has 7.8 homicide deaths per 100K people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

AI breast cancer detection

Preliminary results from a Swedish research trial showed that artificial intelligence (AI) may help radiologists reduce their workload and detect more cases of breast cancer.

The preliminary findings of the study of more than 80K women were published in The Lancet Oncology journal. Researchers found that AI-supported breast screening detected 20% more cancers compared with the double reading of mammograms by two radiologists. The AI screenings resulted in a cancer detection rate of 6 per 1K screened women, compared with 5 per 1K with the standard approach. Furthermore, the use of AI screenings did not increase the number of false positives and reduced the reading workload of radiologists by 44%.

Per CDC data, around 240K cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and 2.1K in men each year in the U.S. According to the Radiological Society of North America, both Europe and US face a shortage of radiologists and the demand is expected to increase as the global population ages.
