PS5 giveaway riots

Twitch streamer Kai Cenat has been charged with inciting a riot after a giveaway in a New York City park resulted in thousands flooding the park Friday, according to authorities.

The social media influencer had announced that he would be giving away PlayStation 5 devices and other electronics to his followers at New York's Union Square. The giveaway was set to take place at Union Square Park at 4 PM, and police reported that the park was full of people by 3 PM. 1K officers were deployed to the scene as the crowd began throwing bottles and stones and climbing on cars. The police arrested 65 people.

Cenat, 21, is a video creator with 6.5M followers on the platform Twitch, where he regularly livestreams. He also has 4M subscribers on YouTube and his 299 YouTube videos have amassed more than 276M views among them. According to a police spokesperson, Cenat is due to appear in court on August 18th.

Train derails in Pakistan

A train derailed near the capital of Pakistan yesterday, leaving at least 30 people dead and 100 injured, according to local authorities.

At least eight coaches of the train, which was travelling from Karachi to Abbottabad, derailed in Nawabshah. The Minister of Railways said at least 1K passengers were aboard the train when it derailed on a section of track where no faults had been reported. It remains unclear what led to the derailment. Local rescue teams came to the scene and extracted those injured and trapped inside the train cars. Train traffic was also suspended on the main railway line as repair trains were dispatched to the scene.

Accidents and derailments occur frequently on Pakistan’s railway system. In June 2021, two trains collided near Daharki in Sindh, killing at least 65 people and injuring about 150 others. Between 2013 and 2019, 150 people died in such incidents, according to local media reports.

U.S. knocked out of World Cup

The U.S. women’s national team is out of the 2023 Women's World Cup after losing a 5-4 round of penalty kicks against Sweden.

The U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher appeared to deflect a penalty shot by Lina Hurtig, but video assistant referee showed the ball rolled back across the goal line by millimeters, giving Sweden the game in the round of 16. This is the earliest exit the team has made at a major tournament, having reached the semifinals at all but one World Cup and Olympics. It was also the fourth time the Americans went to extra time at the World Cup.

The game marked the end of Megan Rapinoe’s World Cup career. The 38-year-old player announced last month that this would be her last international tournament. The United States have recieved the Women’s World Cup title four times, with the most recent time being at the 2019 tournament in France.
