Flooding in Alaska

Officials in Juneau, Alaska, declared an emergency after record glacial flooding destroyed at least two buildings and forced residents to evacuate.

A glacial lake outburst from the Suicide Basin, an ice and water-filled basin adjacent to Juneau’s Mendenhall Glacier, resulted in the Mendenhall Lake and River overflowing and flooding. Two homes were lost in the flooding, and a third was partially destroyed, according to Juneau’s deputy city manager. There have been no reports of injuries or fatalities. The lake crested at a record 14.97 feet, higher than the previous record of 11.99 feet set in 2016, according to the National Weather Service.

Suicide Basin has released water that has caused sporadic flooding along the Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River since 2011, according to the weather service. A study released earlier this year found that floods caused by the melting of glaciers pose a risk to about 15M people worldwide.

Paramount to sell Simon & Schuster

Paramount Global agreed to sell book publisher Simon & Schuster to private equity firm KKR for $1.62B, the media company announced yesterday.

The deal will mark the second time Paramount has tried to sell Simon & Schuster after the company had to walk away from a deal it struck in 2021 with Penguin Random House. The deal was blocked by federal regulators over antitrust concerns and Paramount collected a $200M termination fee as a result. According to Paramount executives, the proceeds of the Simon & Schuster sale will be used in the company’s ongoing effort to pay down debt.

Simon & Schuster, whose authors include Stephen King, Colleen Hoover, and Bob Woodward, is one of the so-called “Big Five” of New York publishing, with others including Penguin Random House, HarperCollins Publishing, Hachette Book Group, and Macmillan. They currently publish and distribute more than 36K titles and have more than 1.6K employees.

A new fusion energy milestone

U.S. scientists announced that they achieved net energy gain in a nuclear fusion reaction for a second time, this time with a higher energy yield.

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory repeated the fusion ignition breakthrough in an experiment in the National Ignition Facility, focusing a laser on a target of fuel to fuse two light atoms into a denser one. Nuclear fusion reaction involves combining two atomic nuclei to form a single heavier one, releasing an enormous amount of energy. Researchers hope that nuclear fusion may be a limitless, clean, and safe source of power that could be used to produce power at an industrial scale.

In May of this year, Microsoft made the world’s first purchase agreement for nuclear fusion energy, aiming to set up power plants within the next five years. Scientists maintain, however, that technology needs to be significantly scaled up from the current experiments for it to be a viable energy source.
