Iran prisoners deal

Iran has moved five Americans from prison and placed them on house arrest, the White House confirmed yesterday, as negotiations continue for their full release.

Iranian officials said that the prisoner transfer marked “a significant initial step” in the implementation of the developing agreement. The deal would reportedly include the U.S. unfreezing $6B to $7B in Iranian government assets blocked under U.S. sanctions. The final transfer of the money and the release of the detainees is expected in the next month or so. The deal has unfolded amid increased American military presence in the Persian Gulf, with the possibility of U.S. troops boarding and guarding commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. government has publicly identified three of the five American citizens held in Iran as Emad Shargi, Morad Tahbaz, and Siamak Namazi, who have each spent several years in an Iranian prison. The State Department has declared them all to have been wrongfully detained.

SCOTUS blocks Purdue Pharma settlement

The Supreme Court blocked Purdue Pharma from going forward with Chapter 11 proceedings yesterday, agreeing to hear a challenge by the Department of Justice.

Purdue filed for Chapter 11 in 2019 after facing thousands of lawsuits over its marketing of the painkiller OxyContin. The DOJ argued that the reorganization plan put forth by Purdue would have released members of the Sackler family who own the company from civil liability in exchange for paying up to $6B to Purdue’s reorganization fund that would be used to fight the opioid epidemic. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had previously ruled that the plan could proceed.

Opioids have been linked to more than 70K fatal overdoses annually in the U.S. in recent years. Most of those are from fentanyl and other synthetic drugs. OxyContin is a Schedule II substance under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning it has a high potential for abuse.

Russia’s new moon mission

Russia has launched its first mission to the moon in nearly 50 years, aiming to land on the lunar surface ahead of an Indian spacecraft.

The launch of the Luna-25 craft to the moon is Russia’s first since 1976 when it was part of the Soviet Union. The Russian lunar lander is expected to reach the moon on August 23rd, about the same day as an Indian craft which was launched on July 14. India and Russia are both aiming to be the first to land at the moon’s south pole. The Russian spacecraft will take about 5.5 days to travel to the moon’s vicinity, then spend three to seven days orbiting at about 62 miles before heading for the surface.

Only three governments claim to have managed successful moon landings, the Soviet Union, the United States, and China. Russia’s last lunar lander, Luna 24, landed on the moon on August 18, 1976. Russia’s most recent space landing missions in 2016 and 2011, ended up failing.
