Your Daily Brief

August 16th, 2023

Good morning, and happy Wednesday! Harrison Ford's legendary Indiana Jones character may fear snakes, but a newfound species of snake in Peru has been named Tachymenoides Harrisonfordi to honor the actor's environmental advocacy. This is the third species to be named after Ford, whose name has also been given to a species of ant and spider. That’s quite the legacy, but we’re all wondering…snakes? Why’d it have to be snakes?

Trump’s fourth indictment

Former President Donald Trump was indicted in Georgia yesterday over his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state.

Trump was charged in the 41-count Fulton County indictment alongside 18 others, including his former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, and lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman. He was charged with 13 counts, including violation of Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, ACT (RICO). The indictment comes after an investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis into alleged efforts of the former president and his allies to pressure Georgia officials to change the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state. Trump denies all charges against him.

This is the fourth indictment against Donald Trump since April. It comes just two weeks after the Justice Department special counsel charged him with conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election. Former president Trump is currently campaigning for the GOP 2024 nomination.

Dominican republic blast

The death toll from an explosion near the Dominican Republic’s capital rose to 11 yesterday, with more than 50 people injured and 11 still missing.

The explosion occurred in a commercial center in San Cristobal called the “Old Marketplace,” where people buy goods ranging from vegetables to clothes. According to Health Minister Daniel Rivera, authorities have still not been able to access “ground zero” where the explosion occurred because of fires that remained burning. The cause of the explosion has not been established. More than 24 rescue units responded to the blast, and the injured were taken to various hospitals. At least 36 of the injured remained hospitalized as of yesterday.

San Cristobal, the birthplace of dictator Rafael Trujillo, was the site of another explosion nearly 23 years ago. An arms depot exploded in October 2000, killing at least two people and injuring more than two dozen others, forcing authorities to evacuate thousands.

Sage Steele leaves ESPN

ESPN and host Sage Steele settled a lawsuit she filed after being disciplined for comments she made about the company’s Covid-19 policy.

In an announcement made yesterday, Steele shared that following the settlement, she is leaving the company. Steele was taken off the air for 10 days in October 2021 after she made comments criticizing ESPN and The Walt Disney Co.’s requirement that employees be vaccinated against Covid-19, per her lawsuit. ESPN, however, denied suspending her. In June, the company offered to settle the lawsuit for just over $500M plus attorneys fees and costs.

Steele joined ESPN in 2007 after starting out on Comcast SportsNet. She became one of the mainstays on SportsCenter and made appearances on NBA Countdown. ESPN has been working to cut costs as its parent company has seen declining viewership and advertising for its linear operations. The company has cut ties with a number of announcers and analysts, including Keyshawn Johnson, Jeff Van Gundy, and Jalen Rose.
