Hilary hits the Southwest

Tropical Storm Hilary made landfall yesterday on the Baja California peninsula, with flooding expected in the region, including portions of the southwestern United States.

Hilary, previously a hurricane, was downgraded to a tropical storm yesterday morning. The storm is forecasted to produce three to six inches of rain, with maximum amounts of up to 10 inches in parts of northern Baja California. The National Hurricane Center has warned of “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding” as the storm makes its way toward Southern California and the southwestern U.S. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an emergency declaration in preparation for the tropical storms. Meanwhile, Mexico’s navy evacuated 850 people from islands off the Baja coast and deployed almost 3K troops for emergency operations.

Despite being downgraded, forecasters have said the storm is still predicted to enter the history books as the first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years, bringing flash floods, mudslides, isolated tornadoes, high winds, and power outages.

Russian moon mission fails

Luna-25, Russia’s first moon mission in 47 years, ended in failure on Saturday as the spacecraft spun out of control and crashed into the lunar surface.

The probe crashed on the moon’s surface after a thruster firing went awry, cutting off communications and putting the spacecraft in the wrong orbit, according to an announcement from Russian space agency Roscosmos. The spacecraft was designed to study the lunar soil and look for signs of water ice near the moon’s south pole. Water ice could be a valuable resource for future human missions to the moon, as it could be converted into air and rocket fuel.

The Luna-25 probe was in a race with an Indian spacecraft launched on July 14th to be the first to reach the moon’s south pole. Both were expected to reach the moon between today and Wednesday. The mission was Russia’s first lunar operation since 1976, when it was part of the Soviet Union.

Spain takes Women’s World Cup

Spain’s La Roja clinched its first Women’s World Cup title yesterday with a 1-0 victory over England’s Lionesses.

The victory made Spain the first team to hold the under-17, under-20, and senior world titles at the same time. Spain has also joined Germany as the only two nations to earn both the men’s and women’s titles. Spain’s Olga Carmona scored the only goal of the game in the first half of the final. Spain qualified for the Women's World Cup for the first time in 2015 and had never come out on top in a knockout game in a major international tournament before this tournament.

The title comes as La Roja has faced turmoil between multiple players, the team’s coach and technical staff, and Spain’s governing body over the last year. Spain’s coach, Jorge Vilda, has faced criticism from his own players for creating a toxic workplace to the point that 15 players refused to play for the national team last year.
