Neonatal murders sentence

Lucy Letby, a former neonatal nurse convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others was sentenced to life in prison yesterday.

The 33-year-old reportedly killed the newborns between 2015 and 2016 by overfeeding them with milk, poisoning them with insulin, or injecting them with air, while working as a nurse in the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital in northern England. The sentence comes after a Manchester Crown Court jury that deliberated for 22 days convicted Letby of murdering the seven babies while also preying on the vulnerabilities of sick newborns and the anxiousness of their parents. She refused to appear in the dock for her sentencing hearing.

Letby was given multiple whole-life terms, one for each offense, becoming the fourth woman in U.K. history to receive such a sentence. She was given the most severe punishment possible under British law, which does not allow the death penalty.

Ecuador bans drilling

Ecuadorians voted against drilling for oil in the Yasuni National Park, a decision that will require the state oil company to end operations in the protected area of the Amazon rainforest.

With over 90% of the ballots counted by yesterday morning, around 6 in 10 Ecuadorians rejected the oil exploration in Block 43, situated within Yasuni. The park currently holds one of Ecuador’s largest reserves of crude oil. State oil company Petroecuador currently produces almost 60K barrels a day in the park. The referendum applies only to Block 43, but oil production extends to other sections of Yasuni Park and into Indigenous territories. The vote was part of a snap general election that included votes for the presidency and National Assembly.

In 1989, Yasuni was designated a world biosphere reserve by UNESCO and is often described as one of the world’s greatest havens of biodiversity. The park is also the home of several Indigenous communities, some of whom live in self-isolation.

Voice of Mario resigns

Charles Martinet, the original voice of Mario in Nintendo games since the 1990s, is stepping down, as confirmed by Nintendo of America.

Nintendo of America revealed Martinet's departure in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The company announced that Martinet will now serve in the role of “Mario Ambassador,” traveling around the world to promote the character, signing autographs, and performing other Nintendo character voices. In addition to his signature Mario character, Martinet has voiced other Nintendo figures including Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and Baby Mario, among others. He began voicing the Mario character in 1996's Super Mario 64 and continued the role through Mario games on the GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and Switch.

Super Mario Bros was first released in Japan on September 13th, 1985. The Super Mario video game series has sold more than 430M copies worldwide, and it is estimated to have grossed more than $55B.
