Indian moon landing

India's Chandrayaan-3 lander successfully touched down on the surface of the moon yesterday, days after a Russian lander crashed into the lunar surface.

After a failed attempt to land on the moon in 2019, India now joins the United States, the Soviet Union, and China as the fourth country to land on the moon. It is also the first country to land a spacecraft near the moon’s south pole. The mission, which began more than a month ago at an estimated cost of $75M, is expected to last another two weeks. S. Somnath, chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, said that India would next attempt a manned lunar mission.

The south pole of the moon is thought by scientists to be rich in water ice, which might be ideal to convert into rocket fuel, allowing access to deeper space destinations such as Mars. Both the U.S. and China are planning human missions to that region in the coming years.

Wagner mercenary leader dies

Mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, who led a brief armed rebellion against the Russian military earlier this year, has died in a plane crash north of Moscow, according to Russian state media.

The Embraer aircraft, en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg, was carrying seven passengers and three crew. The crash killed all 10 people on board, per Russia’s civil aviation agency. The signal was lost in a rural region where there are no nearby airfields where the jet could have landed safely. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the crash.

Prigozhin founded the Wagner mercenary group in 2014, which has been active in Ukraine, Syria, and West Africa. Prigozhin led a rebellion against Russian leadership in June, moving his troops from Ukraine, seizing the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, and threatening to march on Moscow. The stand-off was settled by a deal that allowed Wagner troops to move to Belarus or join the Russian army.

Evidence of possible Martian life

Researchers from NASA have found evidence suggesting that Mars may have once held the right conditions to support life.

The new evidence is based on data collected by the Curiosity rover which is operated by NASA. The researchers said that in 2021 Curiosity found salt remains that formed a hexagonal shape in soil, dating back 4B years. This hexagonal evidence suggests there were long dry periods in the Gale Crater area. NASA said this finding provides evidence that climate cycles repeatedly happened on Mars, with both wet and dry seasons. The researchers claim having both wet and dry seasons, as we have on Earth, could have provided the right conditions for life on Mars.

Part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission, Curiosity is the largest rover ever sent to Mars. The rover landed in Gale Crater on Mars on August 6, 2012, and as of 23 August 2023, has been active on Mars for 3926 sols (solar day on Mars).
