Trump surrenders in Georgia

Former President Trump surrendered and was booked yesterday in Georgia on criminal charges relating to his alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election results.

The Fulton County prosecution is the fourth criminal case against Trump since March when he became the first former president in U.S. history to be indicted. Trump faces 13 counts in the Georgia case. He is one of 19 people charged, including his ex-chief of staff, Mark Meadows, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Following his booking, he was released on a $200K bond.

Early yesterday, one of Trump’s co-defendants, lawyer Ken Chesebro, filed a motion asking for an October 23rd trial start date, a request a Georgia judge granted. Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney, followed that ruling with her own request to set that date as the start for all 19 defendants. She had previously suggested beginning the trial in March 2024.

BRICS invites new members

The BRICS economic coalition of emerging markets extended membership invitations to six nations in what will be the bloc's first expansion in more than a decade.

The BRICS alliance, which is composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is set to invite Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to join. Their membership would take effect from January 1, 2024. South Africa is currently hosting the 15th BRICS summit, where the group’s expansion was a main point of the meeting agenda. More than 20 countries have formally applied for BRICS membership, including the six that have been invited.

BRICS has a stated aim to amplify the voice of the Global South. The bloc was formed in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined the group one year later. The bloc represents around 40% of the world's population and contributes more than a quarter of the global GDP.

Emperor penguins facing ‘quasi extinction’

Four out of five known breeding sites for emperor penguins in a part of Antarctica experienced a “total breeding failure” during the 2022 season, according to a study published yesterday.

The research, published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, found that more than 90% of emperor penguin colonies in Antarctica could be “quasi-extinct” by the end of the century. Using satellite images, scientists at the British Antarctic Survey were able to see that sea ice in the Bellingshausen Sea region last year broke up long before the start of the birds’ fledgling period, when penguin chicks would have developed their waterproof feathers. It is not until they grow these feathers that they are able to leave their colonies to find food.

There are about 300K breeding pairs left of the world's largest penguins. Of 62 known penguin colonies, around 30% were harmed by low sea-ice levels last year and 13 likely failed entirely, according to scientists.
