Proud Boys sentenced

Proud Boys leaders Joe Biggs and Zachary Rehl have been sentenced to over a decade in prison for their roles in events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

The 17-year prison term for Biggs and 15-year sentence for leader Rehl were the second and third-longest sentences handed down yet in the January 6th cases. Biggs and Rehl were among five Proud Boys members scheduled to be sentenced this week, after being convicted of charges including seditious conspiracy in April. They are the first Proud Boys to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, who will preside over similar hearings of three others who were convicted by a jury in May.

More than 1.1K people have been charged with federal crimes in connection to January 6th, according to the Department of Justice. Over 600 of them have been convicted and sentenced. The longest sentence handed down has been 18 years.

Johannesburg building burns

At least 73 people died when a five-story building in Johannesburg occupied by unhoused people caught fire yesterday, according to South African emergency services.

Another 43 people were injured in the blaze, which broke out at about 1 AM in Johannesburg’s central downtown district. More than 200 people were living in the building, witnesses said, including in the basement. According to officials, there was an “informal settlement” inside the building, with rows of “shacks” on each floor, which caused a delay in finding the bodies during the search and recovery operation. Authorities haven’t yet established the cause of the fire, though they said initial evidence suggests it started with a candle.

The building in question was reportedly owned by the city of Johannesburg and is considered a heritage site, but was not being managed by the city. It was once the site of South Africa’s “pass” office, which controlled the movement of Black people under the system of apartheid.

West Point uncovers treasure

A nearly 200-year-old West Point time capsule that appeared to be filled with dust when it was opened during a livestream ended up containing treasure, according to the U.S. Military Academy.

In a news release, West Point announced that the lead box believed to have been placed by cadets in the base of a monument contained six silver American coins dating from 1795 to 1828 and a commemorative medal. All were discovered in the sediment of the box, which at Monday’s ceremonial opening appeared to be empty. Various experts indicate the potential value of most of the coins, depending on the condition, is within the range of $200 to over $1K.

The find confirms academy officials’ theory that the box was left by cadets in 1828 or 1829, when the original monument–which honors Revolutionary War hero Thaddeus Kosciuszko–was completed. Kosciuszko had designed wartime fortifications for the Continental Army at West Point.

Bring the spa home

Think of essential oils like “hyper-extracts” of botanicals. Distilled from a plant’s volatile oils (the most research-supported component), these potent healing liquids can be more effective than extracts, teas, lotions, or other products per ounce.

Lavender, oregano, peppermint oil, and more have become incredibly popular.

AromaTru changed the game on essential oil diffusers through a waterless technology, with:

  • No messy refilling water, or cleaning
  • No mold
  • No measuring drops
  • No accidentally getting oils on your hands

Put up to 4 essential oil bottles directly in the device to disperse without water! You won’t ever go back to water-based diffusers again.

AromaTru also allows you to set timing, duration, and intensity to your precise liking. Tip News readers get over 30% off this next-gen diffuser (and big discounts on organic oils too)!
