Your Daily Brief

September 8th, 2023

Good morning, and happy Friday! A newly discovered comet is passing through our cosmic neighborhood for the first time in more than 400 years. Stargazers across the Northern Hemisphere should catch a glimpse as soon as possible, either this week or early next, because it will be another 400 years before the wandering ice ball returns. We hope you have a wonderful weekend stargazing and can see the Nishimura comet as it flies by!

Peter Navarro convicted of contempt

Peter Navarro, a trade adviser to former President Donald Trump, was convicted yesterday of two misdemeanor counts of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena.

The House committee that investigated the events at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, subpoenaed Navarro for testimony and documents about strategies to allegedly overturn the 2020 election. Navarro refused to give testimony or produce documents in compliance with the subpoena, arguing that he was protected by executive privilege. Each count carries a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of one year in prison, in addition to a maximum fine of $100K. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta has scheduled sentencing for January 12th, 2024.

Navarro was the second Trump aide to face contempt of Congress charges after former White House adviser Steve Bannon. Bannon was convicted of two counts and was sentenced to four months behind bars, though he has been free pending appeal.

Danny Masterson sentencing

Actor Danny Masterson was sentenced yesterday to 30 years to life in prison for the sexual assault of two women in 2003.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo handed down the sentence after denying a motion from Masterson for a new trial and hearing statements from the women. After a mistrial in 2022, prosecutors went back to court earlier this year, where on May 31, a second jury found Masterson guilty of sexual assault. Prosecutors also alleged that Masterson used his prominence in the Church of Scientology, where the women were also members at the time, to avoid consequences after the attacks, and the women blamed the church for their hesitancy in going to the police about Masterson. The actor, however, maintains his innocence.

Masterson starred in That ’70s Show from 1998 until 2006. He was also in the 2016 Netflix comedy The Ranch but was written off the show following the investigation.

Rescuers race to save trapped caver

A rescue effort is underway in Turkey as American speleologist Mark Dickey, 40, remains trapped more than 3.2K feet inside a cave.

The experienced caver suddenly became ill from gastrointestinal bleeding over the weekend during an expedition with a handful of others, including three other Americans, in the Morca cave in southern Turkey's Taurus Mountains. More than 150 Turkish and international cave rescue experts are leading the effort to save him. The Turkish Caving Federation said that his condition was stabilizing and that the bleeding had stopped. He can walk with assistance but needs a stretcher to be removed from the cave. It could be another week until Dickey makes it to the surface.

Dickey was on an expedition mapping the 4K feet deep Morca cave system, the third deepest cave in Turkey, for the Anatolian Speleology Group Association. A speleologist is a scientist who studies caves or a person who goes into caves as a sport.
