Death toll from Moroccan quake increases

The death toll from the earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday surpassed 2.1K as rescue personnel worked to find survivors trapped beneath the rubble, according to the country's Interior Ministry.

The U.N. estimated that 300K people were affected by the magnitude 6.8 quake, Morocco’s strongest earthquake in over a century. The epicenter was in the al Haouz province, where the highest death toll has been recorded. A magnitude 4.9 aftershock struck the region after the initial quake on Friday, per the U.S. Geological Survey. A magnitude 3.9 quake, likely an aftershock, hit the area yesterday. Several governments and the UN have offered their support (including rescue and recovery assistance) to Morroco as it continues to assess the damage.

The deadliest earthquake in Morocco's recent history was a magnitude 5.8 quake in 1960 that killed 12K people. In 2004, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake near the city of Al Hoceima left more than 600 dead.

Hurricane Lee predictions

Hurricane Lee, now a Category 2 storm, is forecast to re-intensify as it heads west and northwest in the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

Over the weekend, the storm intensified at one of the fastest rates on record to reach Category 5 intensity but was disrupted by dry air, strong upper-level winds, and other factors. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) found the storm made an intensity leap of 80 mph in 24 hours. The escalation exceeded the 35 mph increase needed to fit the definition of rapid intensification. The core is expected to move north of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, according to the NHC, but the agency said it was too soon to determine the full impact Lee could still have.

Category 5 status, when sustained winds are at least 157 mph, is rare. Only about 4.5% of named storms in the Atlantic Ocean have grown to a Category 5 in the past decade, according to scientists.

U.S. Open results

The U.S. Open concluded yesterday in New York with Novak Djokovic defeating Daniil Medvedev and Coco Gauff beating Aryna Sabalenka.

Novak Djokovic claimed a historic 24th major championship with his U.S. Open victory, matching Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam singles titles in tennis history. Meanwhile, Coco Gauff earned her first Grand Slam title while becoming the 11th teenager to ever receive a Grand Slam singles title. Djokovic emerged for a 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Medvedev, extending his lead in men’s tennis Grand Slam titles. Coco Gauff beat number 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 game, coming back after the first set.

Djokovic has now won titles at exactly one-third of the majors he has played in and has reached the final in exactly half (36) of the Slams he's played. Gauff’s victory comes one month after her first WTA 1000 event at the Cincinnati Open.

Series starts tomorrow

Throughout history, civilizations such as ancient Egypt, China, India, the Mayan and Aztec empires, have all recognized the power of food as medicine.

Our relationship with food is sacred and intimate, from planting seeds to consuming plants' energy. Food has the ability to change our mood, bring people together, and heal.

The famous quote, "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine thy food," spoken by Hippocrates, emphasizes the importance of combining the right foods with medicinal herbs for a healthy life.

However, we have forgotten this truth and turned to mass-produced, artificial, and nutrient-depleted foods. As a result, people are becoming sick. To achieve good health, we must consume nutrient-dense, mineral-rich, consciously-created food.

It's time to remember and embrace this ancient wisdom. A new docuseries called Healing Kitchen: Let Food Be Thy Medicine explores the power of medicinal foods in preventing and healing disease.

This transformative series begins tomorrow and offers powerful recipes and ancient remedies to create a kitchen that promotes natural wellness and nourishment. Watch the trailer HERE!
