DOJ charges former Memphis officers

The Department of Justice indicted five former Memphis police officers who were charged in a state murder case over the death of Tyre Nichols earlier this year.

Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, died days after being beaten by Memphis police officers who were members of a now-disbanded specialized unit during a January traffic stop. The officers, in a four-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury, are accused of obscuring body-camera recordings of the assault and lying to their superiors. The federal indictment is separate from the charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and official misconduct previously brought by local prosecutors in Tennessee state court. The five former officers have pleaded not guilty to state charges of second-degree murder and other alleged offenses in the case.

The Justice Department announced an investigation in July into how Memphis Police Department officers use excessive force and conduct arrests, one of several “patterns and practices” investigations it has undertaken in other U.S. cities.

McCarthy calls for impeachment inquiry

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced yesterday he is directing the U.S. House to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden over his family’s business dealings.

The House Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees will lead the inquiry after months of investigating Biden over allegations that he benefited from his son Hunter Biden's business dealings. The White House, however, has insisted Biden was not involved in his son’s business dealings. The inquiry will give congressional investigators greater authority to investigate the president, including by issuing subpoenas for documents and testimony that can be more easily enforced in court. McCarthy's announcement means the House will move forward on an impeachment inquiry into Biden without a formal vote on the House floor.

The announcement came as the House resumed work yesterday with 11 working days to avoid a federal shutdown. Government funding is to run out on September 30th, the end of the federal fiscal year.

Aaron Rodgers’ season ends

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, making his debut with the New York Jets, was carted off the field after suffering a left Achilles injury and will miss the rest of the 2023 NFL season.

According to the NFL Network, Rodger tore his Achilles tendon and will require surgery. Torn Achilles tendons typically take several months of recovery due to the extensive rehabilitation needed. Rodgers took four snaps against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night before being sacked by Buffalo Bills linebacker Leonard Floyd. After being looked at in the blue medical tent on the sidelines, the 39-year-old was taken to the locker room on a cart, and he missed the rest of the game, where the Jets claimed victory in overtime.

At 39, Rodgers is the second-oldest player in the league. This was to be his 19th season. Rodgers, who spent his first 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, was acquired by the Jets in April.
