Pennsylvania fugitive captured

Danelo Cavalcante has been captured alive in Pennsylvania after he escaped from Chester County Prison and eluded authorities for nearly two weeks, according to state police.

An aircraft using thermal technology led tactical teams of State Police and U.S. Border agents to the fugitive's location early yesterday morning, but a storm with severe lightning prevented his immediate capture. When the teams moved in, Cavalcante tried to evade capture, but authorities released a dog that ultimately subdued the prison escapee. Over 500 law enforcement officers from state, local, and federal agencies were involved in the search for Cavalcante. Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry said he will be taken to a state correctional institution where “he will be housed for the foreseeable future.”

Cavalcante was convicted of first-degree murder for fatally stabbing his former girlfriend and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He is also wanted in Brazil in connection with a 2017 murder there.

Romney announces retirement

Senator Mitt Romney of Utah announced yesterday that he will not seek reelection next year, with his current term ending in 2025.

In a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, the 76-year-old said he will be in his mid-80s if he is elected to a second term and emphasized the need for a new generation of leaders, saying “frankly, it's time for a new generation of leaders." Romney was elected to the Senate in 2018 and is serving his first term. He also served as Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. He then ran for president in 2008, finishing behind John McCain in the GOP primary, and became the Republican nominee in 2012, losing to former President Obama.

Romney is the sixth incumbent senator to announce plans to retire after the end of the term in 2025, joining Mike Braun of Indiana, Tom Carper of Delaware, Ben Cardin of Maryland, Dianne Feinstein of California, and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan.

El Chapo’s wife released

Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, has been released from a U.S. prison after serving for nearly two years.

Coronel, 34, was sentenced to three years in prison in November 2021 after pleading guilty to charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. Her sentence also included four years of supervised release and a forfeiture of $1.5M. According to U.S. justice officials, before her arrest, she also helped her husband escape from a high-security Mexican prison in 2015. Coronel had been held at a residential reentry management facility in Long Beach, California before her release.

The former beauty queen married Guzman at the age of 18 in 2008. Her husband is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Colorado. Last month, he sent a handwritten letter requesting his wife and their two daughters be allowed to visit him.

The downside of vegan snacks

These days the grocery store is filled with “healthy” snacks that would tempt even the most diehard Doritos devourer.

There are even vegan cheese puffs with the same bright orange “cheese” as their cheddar counterparts!

Unfortunately, these types of snacks are still loaded with processed ingredients, ultra-refined vegetable oils, and off-the-charts levels of sugar and salt.

So what’s a health-conscious, snack-loving person to do?
