Hunter Biden indicted

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, was indicted yesterday on federal firearms charges less than two months after a plea agreement fell apart over tax and firearm charges.

Biden was indicted on three counts tied to the possession of a gun while using narcotics. Two counts are tied to Biden allegedly completing a form indicating he was not using unlawful drugs when he purchased a Colt Cobra revolver in October 2018. The third count alleges that he possessed a firearm while using a narcotic. If convicted, Biden could face up to 25 years in prison, with each count carrying a maximum fine of $250K.

Hunter Biden's plea deal fell apart in a court hearing in July because protecutors and Biden’s legal team couldn't agree on whether the arrangement guaranteed the end of the investigation into Hunter Biden. The indictment comes as the House launched an impeachment inquiry into President Biden this week over his family’s business dealings.

Auto workers go on strike

The United Auto Workers union have launched a strike against General Motors, Ford and Stellantis last night after no deal was struck on a new contract.

The Detroit Three automakers collectively have 150K UAW-represented employees at factories in the U.S., making vehicles like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Jeep Wrangler. The UAW wants a 36% pay increase, a return to traditional pensions and retiree health care, plus 32 hours of pay for 40 hours of work and other concessions. UAW President Shawn Fain said the union will begin the strike at three factories, rather than all U.S. operations of the companies. There has never been a strike against all three automakers at once.

A strike that halts production nationwide could also be costly for the automakers. If it turns into a strike at all of the automakers' U.S. plants, it would cost more than $5B over a period of 10 days, according to the Anderson Economic Group.

NASA shares UFO report

NASA announced yesterday that the study of UFOs will require new scientific techniques, including advanced satellites, and a shift in the perception of unidentified flying objects.

In a 33-page report, an independent team commissioned by NASA cautioned that the negative perception surrounding UFOs poses an obstacle to collecting data. The report claims that NASA’s involvement should help reduce the stigma around what it calls UAPs, or unidentified anomalous phenomena. Officials stressed the panel found no evidence that UAPs had extraterrestrial origin, but NASA vowed to continue studying the UFO phenomenon. NASA has recently appointed a director of UAP research, Mark McInerney. The report also stated that artificial intelligence and machine learning would be "essential tools" for identifying UAPs.

NASA began the space agency's first-ever study of UFOs in 2022. The study cost under $100K and used unclassified data only in an attempt to better understand unexplained sightings in the sky.
