Top TipsHawaii fires aftermathTexas state senators acquitted Attorney General Ken Paxton of all impeachment charges over the weekend, allowing him to return to his post. The attorney general had been suspended without pay from his post after he was impeached in the Texas House of Representatives in May by a 121-23 vote. The articles of impeachment accused Paxton of accepting bribes from campaign donor and developer Nate Paul while disregarding his official duties to the people of Texas. The senators-turned-jurors heard testimony from seven former senior Paxton aides before voting to not remove him from office. Two-thirds of Texas’s 31 senators had to vote to convict him on any single article, but no single article of impeachment saw more than 14 senators vote to find Paxton guilty. The FBI has also been investigating Paxton since 2020 for the alleged misdeeds underpinning his impeachment. A grand jury has reportedly been impaneled to review potential criminal charges. |

Climate protests hit New YorkOver 50K people took to the streets of New York City on Sunday as part of The March to End Fossil Fuels, ahead of the city’s Climate Week. The movement primarily focused on the continued approval of fossil fuel projects in the U.S. The march came as world leaders gather for this week’s UN general assembly, and a UN climate ambitions summit on Wednesday, which the UN secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, has described as a conference meant to highlight new climate commitments. It featured such politicians as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and actors Susan Sarandon, Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton, Kyra Sedgewick, and Kevin Bacon. Organizers of the movement anticipated it would be the largest climate march in the U.S. in the past five years. More than 650 global climate actions took place over the weekend as part of a larger Global Fight to End Fossil Fuels strike. Youth-led organizations, including Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future, played leading roles in organizing the mobilizations. |

Russell Brand accusationsComedian and actor Russell Brand has been accused of the sexual assault and emotional abuse of four women between 2006 and 2013. The allegations come after a joint investigation has been made public by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4's Dispatches in the U.K. A documentary detailing the allegations was released on Saturday on Channel 4's Dispatches series. The women said in the documentary that they only felt ready to tell their stories after being approached by reporters. Most of the women, who the Times said do not know each other, have chosen to remain anonymous. Brand, 48, has denied the allegations and said that all of his relationships have been consensual. Brand rose to fame as a stand-up comic in Britain in the early 2000s, which led to starring roles on Channel 4 and BBC Radio. He later made the jump to Hollywood, appearing in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall in 2008 and the remake of Arthur in 2011. |
