Top TipsAzerbaijan launches military actionAzerbaijan launched military action in the Armenian-controlled Nagorno-Karabakh region yesterday, warning that its operation would not stop until Armenian forces surrendered. In an announcement, Azerbaijan’s defense ministry said it launched an “anti-terrorist operation” in the disputed region hours after four soldiers and two civilians were killed by landmines that it claimed were planted by Armenian saboteurs. At least five people lost their lives and 80 people were injured amid artillery, missile, and drone strikes by the Azerbaijan military, according to Armenian state news. Karabakh authorities said they have asked for immediate talks with Azerbaijan, while Armenia’s foreign ministry has rejected claims that the Armenian army was in Nagorno-Karabakh. Karabakh is internationally recognized as Azerbaijani territory, but part of it is run by breakaway ethnic Armenian authorities who say the area is their ancestral homeland. It has been at the center of two wars, the latest in 2020, since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union. |

UN General Assembly kicks offThe first day of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting started yesterday, bringing in speakers from around the world to discuss the world’s most pressing challenges. The General Debate, which kicks off the UNGA, brought together more than 140 leaders and state representatives to address the 78th session in a series of public speeches. 37 speeches were made, including opening speeches from the secretary-general and General Assembly president. The war in Ukraine figured prominently during the day, with several world leaders pledging continued support for Kyiv, including President Biden. The UNGA also approved a resolution calling for Russia to "immediately, completely and unconditionally" withdraw its forces from Ukraine. This year’s General Debate is being held under the theme, “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity.” The UNGA approves the UN’s annual budget and one of its six main committees directly oversees the funding of peacekeeping missions around the world. |

FTX sues SBF’s parentsFTX is suing the parents of Sam Bankman-Fried, alleging they “fraudulently transferred and misappropriated” funds from the crypto company their son founded. Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, whom the lawsuit says held senior advisory roles in the company, are alleged to have taken funds out of the FTX Group for their own personal benefit from donations and other gifts. FTX’s lawsuit, which was filed on Monday in Delaware, alleges that Bankman and Fried accepted a $10M gift and a $16.4M property in the Bahamas from the crypto company. The couple, who are both Stanford law professors, deny the allegations. FTX entered bankruptcy in November when the global exchange ran out of money after the equivalent of a bank run. Sam Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud, conspiracy, campaign finance law violations, and money laundering. The former FTX CEO is currently in jail after having his bail revoked last month. |
