Rupert Murdoch’s succession plan

Rupert Murdoch is stepping down as chairman of Fox Corp. and News Corp., effective mid-November, according to an announcement made yesterday.

According to a Fox Corp. news release, Murdoch will become chairman emeritus of the two corporations, and his older son, Lachlan Murdoch, will become the sole chairman of both firms. The announcement comes just months after Murdoch halted a plan that would have reunited his media empire by merging Fox and News Corp. It also comes after Fox reached a $787.5M settlement with Dominion Voting Systems in April over allegations that the network deliberately pushed false claims about the Colorado-based company and its role in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

In 1952, Murdoch, now 92, inherited a newspaper in Adelaide, Australia from his father and eventually built from it a news and entertainment enterprise dominant in the United States and Britain, that included a movie studio, a television network, and a roster of cable channels.

Biden extends migrant protections

The Biden administration is granting Temporary Protected Status to 472K Venezuelans who are already in the country, citing “extraordinary” circumstances.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the decision, saying that “the conditions in their home country prevent their safe return.” Those who are granted Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, will also be eligible to apply for work authorization in the U.S. This is in addition to about 242K Venezuelans who already qualified for temporary status before the announcement. It also offers temporary protection from deportation. The latest TPS designation lasts 18 months and applies only to Venezuelans who entered the U.S. before July 31st.

Congress created TPS in 1990 to offer protections to migrants fleeing natural disasters or war in their home countries. According to the United Nations, more than 7.3M people have fled Venezuela in recent years, as the economic humanitarian crisis in the country continues, making food and other necessities unaffordable for those who remain.

Starbucks' request for dismissal found fruitless

Starbucks has been ordered by a federal judge to face a lawsuit alleging that some of its Refresher fruit drinks do not contain the fruit advertised.

U.S. District Judge John Cronan rejected Starbucks’ request to dismiss nine of the 11 claims in the class-action complaint because “a significant portion of reasonable consumers” would assume that the beverages in question would contain the fruit in their names. The plaintiffs claimed that the main ingredients in these drinks were actually water, grape juice concentrate, and sugar. Starbucks has argued the Refreshers had names that accurately describe the flavors as opposed to the ingredients and that "any potential consumer confusion would be dispelled by the information available from Starbucks’s baristas.”

The lawsuit is the latest in a string of litigation against chain restaurants over their advertising. Last month, Burger King failed a similar bid to dismiss a lawsuit that accused it of misrepresenting the size of Whopper burgers.
