Asteroid samples land on Earth

A capsule containing samples from an asteroid landed safely on Earth yesterday, the culmination of a roughly 4B-mile journey over the past seven years.

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission, launched in 2016, has collected as much as a half-pound of asteroid material from asteroid Bennu, which could help scientists understand the earliest stages of the solar system. In a flyby of Earth, NASA’s Osiris-Rex spacecraft released the sample capsule from 63K miles out. The small capsule landed four hours later on a remote expanse of military land. The pebbles and dust delivered yesterday represent the biggest sample taken from beyond the moon.

This was NASA’s third sample return from a deep-space robotic mission. The Genesis spacecraft dropped off bits of solar wind in 2004, but the samples were compromised, while the Stardust spacecraft successfully delivered comet dust in 2006. Osiris-Rex is now already chasing after the asteroid Apophis, and will reach it in 2029.

Standoff in Kosovo ends

A standoff between gunmen and Kosovo authorities at a monastery near the border with Serbia ended yesterday, following a police operation to regain control of the area.

The violence started when a Kosovo police patrol was ambushed by an armed group of at least 30 people near Banjska. At least one police officer was killed and another wounded in the incident, which Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti described as a terrorist act, blaming the Serbian government. The attackers then fled to a nearby monastery, where they were locked in a shootout with police for several hours. At least three assailants were shot dead. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said three of those killed in the shooting were confirmed to be Kosovo Serbs.

Serbia and its former province, Kosovo, have been at odds for decades. Their 1998 through 1999 war left more than 10K people dead. In 2008, Kosovo unilaterally declared independence, but Serbia refused to recognize the move.

Usher headlining the Halftime Show

Usher will be the headlining performer at the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime show, according to an announcement made by Apple Music, the NFL, and Roc Nation yesterday.

In a press release, Usher called it the "honor of a lifetime" and a moment to cross off his bucket list. The game will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday, February 11, 2024. Usher's performance will mark his second Super Bowl appearance. He previously performed alongside the Black Eyed Peas when the group headlined the halftime show back in 2011. Usher is currently headlining his Usher: My Way residency show in Las Vegas.

The singer, an eight-time Grammy recipient, will join a list of featured acts who have played the Super Bowl, including Prince, Madonna, Coldplay, Kendrick Lamar, and Michael Jackson. The Super Bowl halftime slot is one of the top-viewed television events of the year. In 2023, Rihanna drew the most-watched halftime with more than 121M viewers.
