Senator Menendez will not resign

New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez made his first public appearance since his indictment on bribery charges, announcing that he will not resign his Senate seat.

Menendez and his wife were indicted Friday on charges that include conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion. The indictment alleges that the couple accepted bribes in return for the use of the senator's influence to enrich three individuals and benefit the Egyptian government. According to the filing, FBI special agents discovered approximately $500k stuffed into envelopes and closets at Menendez's home. The senator has disputed that the funds were part of the alleged bribery scheme, saying that it was from his "personal savings account.”

The senator faces growing calls to resign from his state's congressional delegation, as well as New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and other senators in Congress. Menendez is expected to see a challenge from Representative Andy Kim over his seat.

Walmart shooter to pay families

A Texas gunman who killed 23 people at a Walmart in 2019 has agreed to pay more than $5M to victims of the attack, according to an order signed by a judge yesterday.

Patrick Crusius was sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences in July after pleading guilty to federal hate crime charges following one of the nation’s deadliest mass shootings linked to hate crimes since 2006. In the attack, the shooter traveled almost 600 miles from North Texas to El Paso before opening fire on shoppers. Twenty-two people were injured in addition to the death toll. Moments before the attack began, Crusius published a post online in which he spoke of a Hispanic “invasion” of Texas.

Crusius still faces a separate state trial in Texas, where he's charged with 23 counts of capital murder and could be eligible for the death penalty. He remains in the Downtown El Paso County Jail in state custody as he awaits trial.

Breakthrough in long Covid research

A new study has found that long Covid patients have clear differences in immune and hormone function from patients without the condition.

The research, published in the September 25th issue of Nature, is the first to show specific blood biomarkers that can accurately identify patients with long Covid. Researchers compared the blood samples of people with long Covid symptoms at least four months after their infection, those who had fully recovered from a case of Covid, and those who'd never been infected with the virus. They found that people with long Covid had irregular levels of different types of immune cells and the stress hormone cortisol.

More than three years since the pandemic began, the findings offer observable evidence of a condition that scientists have struggled to understand. There is currently no standard protocol for diagnosing or treating the symptoms that afflict some patients for weeks and months after they become infected with Covid.
