Congress holds first impeachment inquiry hearing

The House launched a formal impeachment inquiry yesterday against President Biden, looking into allegations that the president benefitted from son Hunter Biden’s business dealings.

The chairmen of the Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees used the opening hearing to review the constitutional and law-related questions involved with impeachment. Representative James Comer, the Oversight chairman, announced he was issuing subpoenas for additional banking records from Hunter Biden and the president’s brother, James Biden. The hearing did not feature witnesses with information about the Bidens or Hunter Biden’s business. Instead, the panel heard from outside experts in tax law, criminal investigations, and constitutional theory.

The impeachment inquiry is expected to span weeks. It is too early to tell if congressional investigators will seek an impeachment vote in the full House of Representatives after holding hearings. Separately, Hunter Biden has been criminally charged with three counts tied to possession of a firearm while using narcotics.

Rotterdam shootings

A gunman killed three people after opening fire in a classroom at a university hospital campus in Rotterdam and a nearby house yesterday, according to Dutch police.

The 32-year-old suspect, a university student, allegedly shot a woman living in his neighborhood and seriously injured her 14-year-old daughter, police said in a televised news conference. The girl later died as a result of her injuries. After setting the woman’s house on fire, the shooter went to the university hospital, Erasmus Medical Center, where he entered a classroom and shot a teacher. The suspect has been taken into custody. Rotterdam police said the shooter was known to them and was convicted of animal cruelty two years ago.

There have been multiple small explosions at homes and businesses across Rotterdam this year, blamed on rival drug gangs. There was no immediate suggestion that yesterday’s shooting was linked to the feuding drug gangs and the motive for the shootings is still under investigation.

Sir Michael Gambon dies

Michael Gambon, the Irish-English actor best known for his role as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six of the Harry Potter movies, has died at the age of 82.

The actor died on Wednesday following “a bout of pneumonia,” according to his publicist. Gambon’s work spanned TV, theater, film, and radio, and over the decades he starred in dozens of movies from Gosford Park and The King’s Speech to the animated film Paddington. He recently appeared in the Judy Garland biopic Judy, released in 2019. In 1998, Gambon was knighted for his contribution to the entertainment industry.

The actor was the recipient of four British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards for his television work. Gambon also received Emmy nominations for more recent television work, as Mr. Woodhouse in a 2010 adaption of Jane Austen’s Emma, and as former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson in 2002’s Path to War.
