Government shutdown averted

Congress passed a temporary funding bill over the weekend to keep the federal government running until mid-November, averting a government shutdown.

The House of Representatives voted 335-91 to fund the government for 45 days until November 17th. The Senate then voted 88-9 in favor of the bill, just three hours before the midnight Saturday deadline to avoid what would have been the federal government’s fourth partial shutdown in a decade. The package drops aid to Ukraine but increases federal disaster assistance by $16B, continuing to fund the government at the current 2023 levels.

A government shutdown would have left families without access to child care, furloughed federal workers living paycheck to paycheck, closed a majority of national parks, and left delays for student debt payments. The last government shutdown lasted from December 22, 2018, to January 25, 2019. Spanning 35 days, it was the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Bombing in Turkey's capital

A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device outside Turkey's interior ministry in the capital, Ankara, yesterday, according to Turkish government officials.

The attack occurred hours before Parliament was set to reopen after its three-month summer recess with an address by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A second attacker was killed in a shootout with Turkish police, leaving two officers injured. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which maintains bases in northern Iraq, claimed responsibility for the bombing. Turkish warplanes carried out airstrikes on suspected Kurdish militant targets following the attack in the Turkish capital. Per a statement by the Turkish interior ministry, 20 targets of the PKK group were “destroyed” in the aerial operation.

The PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and the European Union. The incident comes almost a year after six people were killed and 81 wounded in an explosion in a busy pedestrian street in central Istanbul, for which Turkey blamed Kurdish militants.

Arrest made in Tupac case

A Nevada man believed to be the last living suspect investigated in the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur was arrested, according to authorities.

A grand jury delivered a murder indictment against Duane Keith Davis, who has previously acknowledged that he was in the car that pulled up next to the rapper’s vehicle when he was shot. Until this weekend, however, no charges had ever been filed in the case. The indictment alleges Davis obtained a firearm for the attack "for the purpose of seeking retribution against Tupac Amaru Shakur" and Marion “Suge” Knight, the head of his record label, Death Row. Authorities said Davis will appear in court next week.

Shakur, 25, was shot multiple times on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas. He died from his injuries a week later. The death of the six-time Grammy-nominated rapper came as his fourth solo album, All Eyez on Me, remained on the charts, with some 5M copies sold.
