Gaetz seeks to oust McCarthy

Representative Matt Gaetz introduced a motion to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his leadership position after a stopgap measure passed the House this weekend.

No speaker has ever been removed by a motion to vacate, which can be triggered by a single member but requires a majority of the House to succeed. After its introduction and request for a vote, the privileged resolution is required to be brought to the floor within two days. The stopgap bill, aimed at avoiding a government shutdown, did not include spending cuts or border funding, prompting Gaetz to issue a warning to McCarthy, saying that he would try to oust the speaker if he brought the bill to the floor.

McCarthy became Speaker in January after 15 rounds of voting when he was able to win over a key group of House representatives. Gaetz was one of the representatives who repeatedly voted against McCarthy, and abstained from voting in the final round.

Governor Newsom fills Senate seat

California Governor Gavin Newsom has selected Laphonza Butler, the president of EMILY's List, to fill the U.S. Senate seat held by late Senator Dianne Feinstein.

In California, the governor has the power to appoint a senator to serve until the next regularly scheduled statewide general election. That means Butler will serve until the next senator, whom voters will choose in the November 2024 election, is sworn in. Butler's appointment fulfills Newsom's pledge to appoint a Black woman to the seat, making her the third Black woman to ever serve in the Senate. The appointment comes three days after Feinstein's death at age 90.

Before Butler started her role as president of EMILY's List in 2021, she was a senior campaign adviser to U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2020 election. She has also worked as director of public policy at Airbnb and as a union leader.

Nobel Prize in Medicine recipients

Two scientists received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine yesterday for research that laid the foundation for the Covid-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman discovered a method to use mRNA, which carries instructions for making proteins, for vaccines and other therapies. The research partners produced mRNA with chemically modified bases so that they could be used in vaccines. Their work, published in 2005, initially flew under the radar, and they failed to gain traction for years before two companies, Moderna and BioNTech, took an interest in the technology. Scientists are now also trying out mRNA approaches for cancer, allergies, and other gene therapies.

The Nobel Prize is among the most prestigious in the scientific world and is selected by the Nobel Assembly of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute. It also comes with around $1M to be split between the winners.
