Kevin McCarthy ousted

The House of Representatives ousted Representative Kevin McCarthy as speaker yesterday, the first time in history that the chamber has removed its leader in a no-confidence vote.

The final count to oust McCarthy was 216 to 210. Representative Matt Gaetz introduced the motion to vacate on Monday, following the passage of a stopgap bill, introduced by McCarthy, that was aimed at avoiding a government shutdown. Representative Patrick McHenry has been named as speaker pro tempore, to serve in the office until a new speaker is chosen. McCarthy told lawmakers in the evening he would not run again for speaker, putting the gavel up for grabs. The House will start the speaker vote on October 11.

McCarthy became House Speaker in January after 15 rounds of voting. It remains unclear who will be his successor to lead the House Republican majority.

Missing girl found through ransom note

A missing girl, abducted from a New York state campground, has been found safe after police used fingerprints left on a ransom note to track her down.

Charlotte Sena, 9, disappeared over the weekend while riding her bicycle in the campground, triggering a 48-hour search by over 400 certified search and rescue personnel. Officials homed in on the suspect after he dropped off a ransom note at Sena’s parents’ home Monday and a fingerprint matched a driving while intoxicated arrest made in 1999 in Saratoga. The fingerprint led law enforcement to a nearby residence, an RV trailer where the suspect and his mother reside. After Charlotte was found in a cabinet, she was taken to the hospital and reunited with her family.

The suspect, Craig Nelson Ross Jr., 46, was arraigned overnight on a charge of first-degree kidnapping in Milton Town Court and was remanded into Saratoga County jail without bail. His next court date is set for October 17.

Paris battles bedbugs

A plague of bedbugs has hit Paris and other French cities, raising questions about health and safety during next year's Olympic Games and demands for action.

The party of French President Emmanuel Macron announced yesterday that it would this year put forward a bill to combat surging numbers of reported bedbug cases, which are being increasingly seen as a major potential public health problem. The issue gained national attention last week after footage of the creatures crawling around on high-speed trains and the Paris Metro was published on social media, while many reported sightings in cinemas and even at Charles de Gaulle Airport.

While bedbugs were considered to be eradicated in France in the 1950s, the critters have made a recent resurgence. ANSES, the French Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health Safety, reported that between 2017 and 2022, more than one in 10 households were infested by bed bugs.
