Health workers go on strike

Over 75K union workers at healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente went on strike yesterday, beginning the largest walkout by health workers in U.S. history.

Nurses, radiologists, X-ray technicians, ultrasound sonographers, and others are expected to join the picket lines. The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions approved a strike for three days in California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington, and for one day in Virginia and Washington, D.C. Unions representing Kaiser workers have asked for a $25 hourly minimum wage, as well as increases of 7% each year in the first two years and 6.25% each year in the two years afterward. Union leaders also cite staffing shortages as a critical ongoing problem negatively affecting patient care.

The Kaiser Permanente strike is one of several high-profile labor actions that have taken place across the U.S. this year. The U.S. Bureau of Labour statistics show that more than 309K workers went on strike through August this year alone.

Student debt forgiveness

The Biden administration announced yesterday that another 125k borrowers will have $9B in student debt erased through existing programs.

The relief is a result of the administration’s “fixes” to a number of programs, including the income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness. It comes on the heels of student debt payments resuming for borrowers on October 1st after a more than three-year pause. Interest on federal student debt meanwhile began accruing on September 1st. In June, the Supreme Court struck down Biden’s plan to cancel up to $20K in student debt for most borrowers. Following the court decision, Biden said he’d pursue other paths to deliver borrowers relief.

According to a White House press release, the Biden administration has now forgiven $127B of student debt for roughly 3.6M borrowers. Overall, more than 40M Americans are estimated to have student debt worth about $1.7T.

2030 World Cup on three continents

The 2030 men's FIFA World Cup will be played in six total countries throughout Africa, Europe, and South America, according to the world's governing soccer body.

This marks the first time that the soccer tournament will take place across three continents. Spain, Morocco, and Portugal are set to be World Cup co-hosts in 2030, with opening matches held in Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay to celebrate 100 years of the tournament, which began in South America in 1930. Morocco and Portugal will be hosting for the first time, though Spain previously hosted matches in 1982. The tournament will take place in June and July of 2030, with 104 matches scheduled.

FIFA has also opened bidding for the 2034 World Cup, with only member federations from Asia and Oceania eligible to bid for the hosting rights. Saudi Arabia intends to bid to host the 2034 tournament, with Australia also expressing interest.
