Drone attack hits Syria

A drone attack hit a military graduation ceremony yesterday in the Syrian city of Homs, killing 80 people and wounding 240, according to the country’s health minister.

In a statement, Syria’s military accused fighters “backed by known international forces” for the attack, but no group immediately claimed responsibility. The statement said the armed forces "considers this act an unprecedented criminal one, and affirms that it will respond with full force and determination to these terrorist groups wherever they are". The nation’s defense minister reportedly attended the graduation ceremony but left minutes before the attack. The government has announced a three-day state of mourning starting today, according to Syria’s state television.

At least eight people were also killed on the other side of the country yesterday by Turkish airstrikes targeting Kurdish-controlled areas of northeastern Syria. More than 500K people have been killed by the civil war that erupted after President Bashar al-Assad cracked down on pro-democracy demonstrations in 2011.

New York subway gunman sentenced

Frank James, the mass shooter behind the Brooklyn subway station attack last year, received 10 life sentences yesterday, according to officials.

James pleaded guilty earlier this year to terrorism charges in the mass shooting aboard a Manhattan-bound train. On April 12, 2022, James disguised himself as a construction worker, put on a gas mask, and set off two smoke bombs aboard a subway train before firing a handgun at least 33 times, shooting 10 people. Following the attack, he fled the scene, setting off a 30-hour manhunt. James’ attorneys had asked for a reduced sentence of 18 years, saying he didn’t intend to kill anyone and citing his mental illness.

The shooting prompted local New York officials to add additional surveillance cameras and police to subway trains throughout the city. Although there were no fatalities, a total of 29 people suffered from injuries including smoke inhalation and shrapnel wounds.

The oldest sign of humans in North America

Humans were present in North America earlier than previously thought, according to new research that confirms the antiquity of fossilized footprints at White Sands National Park.

In an article published yesterday in the journal Science, researchers say that the fossilized footprints date to about 21K to 23K years ago, based on radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating techniques. The 61 dated prints, which were discovered in the Tularosa Basin were made at a time when many scientists think that massive ice sheets had sealed off human passage into North America, indicating that humans may have arrived in the region even earlier. The estimated age of the footprints was first reported in Science in 2021 but was met with skepticism from some scientists who questioned the dating conclusion.

Previous archaeological evidence has suggested that human occupation of North America started roughly 16K years ago. However, the earliest archaeological evidence for the region’s settlement has been sparse and oftentimes controversial.

‘Enough’ sleep VS GOOD sleep

Even if you sleep for 8 or more hours, you might not feel rested and alert if you don't get enough deep and REM sleep. Fortunately, there are well-researched compounds that can help you relax, lower your heart rate, and prepare you for rejuvenating sleep.

Two of these compounds are GABA and L-theanine. L-theanine is found in green tea – but not a stimulant – and increases alpha brain waves to calm your mind within 30 minutes. GABA is a neurotransmitter with relaxing effects associated with sleep. Combining these with ingredients like taurine, glycine, magnesium, and 5HTP creates Sleep Breakthrough, a comprehensive nutritional sleep support.

As a Tip News reader, you get up to 44% off, auto-applied at checkout, plus free magnesium and blue light-blocking glasses with 3 bottles or more!
