Israel declares war on Hamas

Israel has declared war on Hamas after the group launched an attack from Gaza over the weekend, leaving at least 250 people dead and 1.5K wounded initially.

Hamas fired rockets early on Saturday at Israeli cities and broke through the border barrier between Gaza and Israel. They entered southern Israel with pickup trucks and occupied Israeli villages and towns close to the border, killing soldiers and civilians, while taking others hostage. Israel retaliated against the attack with airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, killing at least 232 people and wounding another 1.7K. As of yesterday, the death toll had risen to nearly 1.6K on both sides as fighting continued.

The surprise weekend attack by Hamas was the deadliest in Israel since the 1973 war with Egypt and Syria. Since 1967, Israel has controlled the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and enabled the construction of 21 Jewish settlements. Palestinians, however, also claim these territories and see them as part of a future state.

Earthquake hits Afghanistan

At least 2K people were killed in one of the deadliest earthquakes to strike Afghanistan in two decades over the weekend, according to a Taliban government spokesman.

Saturday’s magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit a densely-populated area near Herat. It was followed by three strong aftershocks, measuring magnitudes of 6.3, 5.9, and 5.5. Entire villages were reportedly flattened, with people trapped under collapsed houses while locals waited for help. According to officials, more than 2K people were injured and over 1.3K houses were damaged or destroyed. At least a dozen teams have been helping with the rescue effort, including from the military and nonprofit organizations such as the Red Crescent.

Afghanistan has a history of strong earthquakes, many in the Hindu Kush region bordering Pakistan. In June 2022, an earthquake struck the mountainous region of eastern Afghanistan, flattening stone and mud-brick homes. The quake killed at least 1K people and injured about 1.5K.

Nobel Prize in Economics announced

The Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to Professor Claudia Goldin of Harvard University yesterday for her research on women in the labor market.

According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Goldin "collected over 200 years of data from the U.S., allowing her to demonstrate how and why gender differences in earnings and employment rates have changed over time." Her work showed that women's labor force participation didn't advance linearly with modernization and economic development over time, but rather that female participation in the labor market forms a U-shaped curve.

Out of 93 economics Nobel laureates, Goldin is the third woman to be awarded the prize and the first female solo recipient in any year. Her award follows Nobel honors this year in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace that were announced last week. On Friday, it was announced that imprisoned Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi had recieved the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize.

Memory "fudge"

You’ve likely heard of medicinal mushrooms, but maybe not a compound within called “ergo” (a.k.a. “ergothioneine”).

This “mushroom vitamin” has had recent epic discoveries for brain health:

  • A 2019 study found that taking ergothioneine improves memory and cognitive function in older adults.
  • A 2020 study found it helps adults feel happier and think clearer.
  • A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's found that it reduces inflammation and oxidative stress in brain cells – both known to speed up memory loss in old age.

Most people DO NOT eat enough medicinal mushrooms to get large quantities of this brain-boosting compound.

Fortunately, even if you hate the taste of mushrooms…

Just ONE spoonful of this rich chocolate can feed your brain the “mushroom vitamin” that studies show boosts memory as you age.
