Israel-Hamas War Update

The Israel-Hamas war has continued on, claiming almost 4K lives on both sides in the week since Hamas launched a surprise attack on October 7th.

The Israeli military's bombardment of Gaza continued yesterday and sirens went off across parts of Israel Friday due to incoming rocket fire from Hamas militants in the enclave. Hamas is believed to be currently holding about 150 hostages in Gaza. Israel has now resumed the water supply to the southern Gaza Strip after pressure from the Biden administration, according to Israeli officials. However, as of yesterday, the UN warned that fuel reserves at Gaza hospitals are expected to last about 24 more hours.

Israel and the U.S. are discussing a possible visit by President Biden to Israel later this week, according to officials. 30 U.S. citizens have been killed in the Israel-Gaza conflict and 13 remain unaccounted for, the US State Department has confirmed.

France raises its threat alert

A teacher in France was fatally stabbed and three other people wounded in a school attack by a former student, prompting the nation to raise its threat alert to its highest level.

President Emmanuel Macron’s office announced that France would mobilize up to 7K soldiers to increase security around the country. According to French intelligence services, the suspected attacker, a man of Chechen origin, had been under surveillance since the summer on suspicion of Islamic radicalization. Counterterrorism authorities are investigating the stabbing, and the suspected assailant and several others are in custody. The attacker’s exact motive remains unclear, and he is reportedly refusing to speak to investigators. The stabbing happened almost three years after another teacher was beheaded by a radicalized Chechen near a Paris school.

Amid the heightened vigilance, the Louvre Museum in Paris and the Versailles Palace evacuated visitors and staff after receiving bomb threats on Saturday.  According to local police, bombs were not found at either location.

End of DVDs at Best Buy

Citing a decline in demand for physical media, Best Buy has strategically decided that it will no longer offer DVDs for sale in its stores.

Best Buy will continue to sell movies and TV shows on physical discs through the 2023 holiday shopping season online and in stores, before discontinuing sales in the new year. The company will continue to sell video games. In a statement, Best Buy said that streaming has made DVDs obsolete and it can use physical space in its stores and warehouses for tech products in higher demand. The move comes as Netflix, 25 years after launching its DVD-by-mail service, shipped out its last DVDs to customers on September 29th.

Amid the ascent of streaming video, sales of DVDs and Blu-Ray discs have been declining for years. According to the Digital Entertainment Group, U.S. physical media revenue in the first half of 2023 dropped 28%, to $754M, compared with $1.05B in the year-earlier period.
