Two Swedes shot in Brussels

Two Swedish nationals were fatally shot in Brussels yesterday and another person was wounded in an attack that is being investigated as apparent terrorism.

Belgian authorities have raised the terror alert to the highest level in the capital and the second-highest level across the rest of the nation. According to Belgian officials, the assailant had posted on social media that he was inspired by the Islamic State militant group and the Swedish nationality of the victims was the probable motive for the shooting. Per several media reports, the attacker drove up to the victims on a scooter and opened fire before driving away. Apart from the two Swedes who were killed, a local taxi driver was injured.

In response to the attack, authorities shut down a Belgium-Sweden soccer match that was being hosted at a stadium not far from the shooting. 35K fans were held inside for several hours as a precaution before being evacuated as the manhunt continued.

Rite Aid files for Chapter 11

Rite Aid has filed for Chapter 11 protection and plans to sell part of its business as it attempts to restructure while dealing with losses and opioid-related lawsuits.

The Philadelphia company, which is marking its 60th year in business, has posted annual losses for several years and is expecting a net loss of as much as $680M in the current fiscal year. Rite Aid plans to stay in business while restructuring through a court-controlled process. The drugstore chain has reached an agreement with some key creditors on a financial restructuring plan to cut its debt, according to an announcement made Sunday. The company also said it obtained $3.45B in fresh financing from some of its lenders.

The chain has been grappling with slowing sales, debt, and a series of lawsuits that allege the company helped fuel the nation’s opioid epidemic. In March, the DOJ intervened in a whistleblower lawsuit, claiming that the drugstore chain filled unlawful prescriptions for opioids.

2028 Olympics gets 5 new sports

The 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that five new games will be added to the Olympic program for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Baseball and softball, flag football, cricket, lacrosse, and squash were all approved in an IOC vote yesterday. Recent IOC reforms allow Olympic hosts to propose adding sports solely for their edition of the Games. In a statement made yesterday, the IOC president said “The choice of these five new sports is in line with the American sports culture and will showcase iconic American sports to the world while bringing international sports to the United States.”

Flag football and squash will be making their Olympic debut. Baseball and softball were part of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics before taking a break in 2024. Lacrosse last appeared in the 1908 London Olympics, while cricket was last on the Olympic program for the 1900 Games in Paris.
