Gaza hospital strike

500 people were killed in an airstrike on the al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City yesterday, according to the enclave's Ministry of Health.

Many Palestinians have taken refuge in al-Ahli and other hospitals in Gaza City in the past days to avoid bombardment after Israel ordered all residents of the city and surrounding areas to evacuate to the southern Gaza Strip. The World Health Organization condemned the attack on the Gaza City hospital saying it "was operational, with patients, health and caregivers, and internally displaced people sheltering there." Palestinian officials have alleged that the Israeli military was behind the strike, while Israel has denied involvement and blamed the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Following the attack, Jordan canceled a planned summit between President Biden, King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. President Abbas, who was in Jordan ahead of the meeting, is returning to Ramallah to convene an emergency meeting of Palestinian leadership.

Another House speaker vote

House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan of Ohio fell short of the 217 votes needed to become House speaker during the first roll call ballot yesterday.

200 House Republicans voted for Jordan on the first ballot, while 20 voted against him. All Democrats voted for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Additional voting was postponed yesterday, with Jordan needing to secure more votes to replace the ousted Kevin McCarthy for the speaker role. Jordan received the nomination in the GOP's internal election with a 124-81 vote on Friday. A subsequent vote found that 55 members would not vote for him on the floor, but by Monday Jordan had managed to lower the number of holdouts.

Jordan was selected to be the House GOP’s candidate for speaker in an anonymous vote last week after Representative Steve Scalise dropped out of the race when he did not secure enough votes. The last Speaker, McCarthy, needed 15 rounds of voting over four days in January to earn the gavel.

The world’s hottest chili pepper

The Guinness World Records has crowned Pepper X as the hottest chili pepper in the world, dethroning the Carolina Reaper chili pepper after 10 years.

Pepper X has been in the works since PuckerButt Pepper Co. founder Ed Currie last set the hottest pepper record in 2013 with the Carolina Reaper. Pepper X is a crossbreed of the Carolina Reaper and a pepper that a friend of Currie’s sent him that he says was “brutally hot.” It took 10 years to get Pepper X from the first crossbreed experiment to the record, including five years of testing to prove it was a different and distinct pepper and documenting its average heat over different plants and generations.

Heat in peppers is measured in Scoville Heat Units. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the Carolina Reaper at 1.64M units, while Pepper X’s record is an average of 2.69M units. For comparison, zero is considered bland, and a regular jalapeno pepper registers about 5K units.
