Biden meets with Netanyahu

President Biden met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday, as Israel entered its 12th day at war with Hamas.

During the hour-long visit, Biden assured Israel that the U.S. would stand by the nation and provide whatever it needs to defend itself in its war with Hamas, but cautioned the state against being “consumed” by rage in response to Hamas’ attack. One of the main issues Netanyahu discussed with Biden was the military aid package Israel is requesting from the U.S., which needs Congress' approval. According to Israeli officials, they asked for $10B in military aid. Biden also announced a $100M aid package for the Palestinian population in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Following the meeting, Israel's war cabinet approved the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza from Egypt due to pressure from the U.S. and other countries. President Biden later said that Egypt has agreed to allow 20 trucks of humanitarian assistance through the Rafah Crossing into Gaza.

Joran van der Sloot pleads guilty

18 years after Natalee Holloway vanished in Aruba, the man long suspected in her death has confessed to killing the Alabama teen.

Joran van der Sloot confessed to the murder of Holloway, according to a federal judge who accepted his guilty plea in an extortion case targeting her family. He has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Federal prosecutors accused van der Sloot in a 2010 indictment of hatching a plot to sell information about the whereabouts of Holloway’s remains to her grieving family in exchange for $250K. The Dutch national, who had been serving a 28-year prison sentence in South America for the murder of a Peruvian businesswoman, was extradited to the U.S. in June to stand trial.

Van der Sloot has not been charged in Holloway's presumed death. The federal charges to which he confessed were the only ones to have ever been linked to the disappearance of Holloway, who was last seen in May 2005 and later declared dead.

Netflix price hikes

Netflix announced that it will be raising its prices in the U.S., U.K., and France, following a reported increase in third-quarter subscriber numbers of nearly 9M.

The streaming platform said in its third-quarter earnings report that its premium plan in the U.S. will increase to $22.99 per month, while its one-stream basic plan will rise to $11.99. All other plans will remain at the same cost. The company reported a 9% year-over-year increase in average paid memberships, adding 8.8M subscribers last quarter. That’s compared to 2.4M in the third quarter last year. Overall, Netflix reported 247M paid global subscribers in the third quarter.

The price of Netflix was last raised in January 2022, with many of its competitors, including Hulu, Disney+, and MAX, all having raised prices since then. The company has attributed part of its subscriber growth to its continued password-sharing crackdown, claiming that customers who previously borrowed passwords are now converting into full-paying subscribers.
