Detroit synagogue leader killed

Mourners attended a funeral service yesterday afternoon for a Detroit synagogue president found stabbed to death outside her home Saturday morning.

As mourners gathered to pay respects to Samantha Woll, police said their ongoing investigation of her killing found no evidence of antisemitism as a motive. Police Chief James White had previously urged the public to not draw conclusions until "all of the available facts are reviewed." The Jewish leader’s body was found at her home after a caller alerted officers to a person lying on the ground unresponsive. Officers followed a “trail of blood” to Woll’s home, where authorities believe she was killed. According to officials, investigators are working with the FBI to analyze forensic evidence to piece together a timeline leading to Woll’s death.

Woll, 40, led the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue and was heavily involved in local, state and national politics. She previously worked for Representative Elissa Slotkin and served on state Attorney General Dana Nessel’s re-election campaign.

Second aid convoy enters Gaza

More aid arrived in Gaza yesterday aboard 14 trucks that passed through the Rafah crossing with Egypt, making the second aid shipment into the territory.

On Saturday, an initial convoy entered Gaza, where over 2M people have been cut off from water, food, medicine, and fuel. The 20 trucks brought in items such as medical supplies, tins of tuna and tomato paste, wheat flour, and enough drinking water for 22K people for a day. According to a statement from the White House, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Joe Biden affirmed in a phone call yesterday that there will now be “continued flow of this critical assistance into Gaza.”

For days, Israel has been on the verge of launching a ground offensive in Gaza following Hamas’ October 7th attack. The second aid convoy came as Israel has widened its attacks to include targets in Syria and the occupied West Bank and has increased airstrikes across Gaza.

Dinosaur bone poachers charged

A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City returned a 13-count indictment charging four people with allegedly stealing $1M worth of dinosaur bones and then selling them to China.

According to the indictment, from March 2018 to March 2023, the defendants bought, moved and exported 150K pounds of “paleontological resources” from the Morrison Formation, which is overseen by the federal government. The four defendants are also accused of causing more than $3M in damage, including the losses commercial and scientific value of the bones and the cost of restoring and repairing them. In addition to facing charges of conspiracy against the U.S. and theft of U.S. property, they will face prosecution for violating the federal Paleontological Resources Preservation Act.

In southeastern Utah, the Morrison Formation holds large quantities of bones, fossils and other paleontological resources from the Jurassic period, about 145M years ago. The Morrison site is part of the Dinosaur National Monument and has remains of Allosauruses and Stegosauruses.
