Off-duty pilot attempts to crash plane

An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot was charged with 83 counts of attempted murder yesterday after he reportedly tried to crash an aircraft mid-flight.

During the flight, the suspect, Joseph David Emerson, allegedly attempted to pull the fire extinguisher handles on the engines, causing a “credible security threat,” according to Alaska Airlines. The pilot was riding in the extra seat in the cockpit of the Horizon Air passenger jet when he attempted to shut down the engines, forcing the crew to have to subdue him. The San Francisco-bound flight was then diverted to Portland, Oregon, where Emerson was taken into custody by officers from the Port of Portland. He is currently being held at Multnomah County Detention Center.

Emerson is being charged with 83 counts of attempted murder, as well as 83 charges of reckless endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft. There were 80 passengers and four flight crew members on the flight, according to the airline.

More Hamas prisoners released

Hamas released two elderly Israeli hostages yesterday for what it said were humanitarian reasons, according to the group and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The release of Yocheved Lifshitz, 85, and Nurit Cooper, 79, comes just days after Hamas released an American mother and her teenage daughter from captivity. The two women, along with their husbands, were taken from their homes in the kibbutz of Nir Oz near the Gaza border during Hamas’ October 7th attacks on southern Israeli communities. Their husbands, ages 83 and 84, were not released. Hamas reportedly received nothing in exchange for the release of the two hostages.

At least 212 people were taken hostage by Hamas during their attack that killed more than 1K people, according to Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari. Israel’s retaliatory airstrikes in Gaza have killed at least 5K people as of yesterday morning, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The world’s oldest dog dies

Bobi, the world's oldest dog ever, has passed away at an animal hospital in Portugal, according to an announcement from Guinness World Records yesterday.

Bobi lived to be 31 years and 165 days old. In dog years, he was roughly 86 years old. Bobi was a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a Portuguese breed of farm and guardian dog with a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years. His age was confirmed by his 1992 registration with a veterinary medical service. Bobi’s owner attributed Bobi's old age to his "calm, peaceful" life, during which he was never leashed, drank plenty of water, and exclusively ate human food.

He was recognized as the oldest dog ever in February this year, earning the Guinness World Record from Bluey, an Australian cattle dog, who held the record for almost two centuries. Bobi’s death leaves a 23-year-old Chihuahua named Spike in Ohio as the oldest living dog.
