Top TipsA fourth House speaker nomineeHouse Republican Conference Vice Chair Mike Johnson came in first in an internal vote to become the fourth GOP nominee for speaker since October 11th. Yesterday was the House’s 21st day without a speaker since former speaker Kevin McCarthy was removed earlier this month. Without a speaker, the House has been unable to pass bills for the past 3 weeks. Johnson defeated a field of four other Republicans vying for the nomination with 128 votes compared to 29 for Representative Byron Donalds and 44 for others, including 43 for McCarthy, who was not formally running. Johnson initially finished second to House Majority Whip Tom Emmer in an earlier vote yesterday, but Emmer dropped out hours later due to a lack of support. Johnson’s two predecessors for the nomination Representatives Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan both failed to earn enough votes to secure the gavel. Johnson will need 217 votes, a simple majority, in order to become speaker. |

Meta sued by statesMore than 40 states have filed a lawsuit in federal court against Meta, claiming that the social media company has harmed young people’s mental health. In the lawsuit, the states allege that the company has profited from how it has designed Instagram and Facebook to maximize time spent on the platforms by teens and children, which led to increased advertising revenue. The suit cites several studies including Meta’s own research showing links between young people's use of social media with depression, anxiety, and other health issues. The states are seeking financial damages, restitution, and an end to Meta’s practices that are in violation of the law. Today, a third of teenagers in the U.S. report using social media “almost constantly.” In 2021, a Facebook employee leaked internal research on Facebook products. One set of documents about Instagram’s impact on teens found that “thirty-two percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse.” |

Taco Bell's trademark battle overTaco Bell has claimed victory in its fight over the “Taco Tuesday” trademark, with the popular phrase now free to use in all 50 states. Taco Bell announced yesterday that New Jersey-based Gregory's Restaurant and Bar has relinquished its registration of the trademark. Restaurants across the country can now use the term to promote Tuesday specials without fear of cease-and-desist letters. The chain said it fought to cancel the trademark because the commonly used phrase “should be freely available to all who make, sell, eat and celebrate tacos.” Taco Bell didn’t reveal if a financial settlement was involved. The restaurant is celebrating the end of the dispute with Doritos Locos Tacos on the house on November 21 for customers in New Jersey. The victory comes months after Wyoming-based Taco John's relinquished the trademark it owned since 1989 in 49 other states in July. Taco Bell filed legal petitions in mid-May aiming to cancel the trademark registrations that Taco John's and Gregory's had owned. |
