Ford and UAW reach tentative deal

The United Auto Workers union and Ford reached a tentative contract agreement yesterday that would end almost six weeks of strike action against the automaker.

A tentative agreement comes after a 41-day strike against Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis. The agreement grants 25% in base wage increases through April 2028, and will cumulatively raise the top wage by over 30% to more than $40 an hour, and raise the starting wage by 68%, to over $28 an hour. Previously, Ford had offered 23% pay increases. The four-year deal still has to be approved by 57K union members at the company, but the union has called on all workers at Ford to return to their jobs.

The strike would continue against General Motors and Stellantis, as those companies and the UAW had yet to reach an agreement on a new contract. UAW negotiators hope that a Ford agreement will set a pattern for agreements at Stellantis and General Motors.

Gaza running low on fuel

The U.N. announced yesterday that it is on the verge of running out of fuel in the Gaza Strip, warning that it will have to halt aid operations within a day if fuel is not delivered.

Israel has refused to allow fuel to enter Gaza since Hamas’ October 7th attack that left 1.4K people dead, saying it would only be used by the militant group to fuel its fight against Israel. Hospitals are now only taking in emergency cases, for fear of supplies running out. More than one-third of hospitals in Gaza have closed since the war began due to damage from airstrikes or the lack of fuel, according to the UN.

At least 60 aid trucks carrying humanitarian assistance, such as food, water, and medicine, have crossed from Egypt into Gaza. Aid agencies have said that at least 100 trucks of aid are needed every day to meet the needs of the more than 2M residents of the besieged enclave.

Mike Johnson becomes House speaker

House Republicans elected Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana to serve as the 56th speaker of the House yesterday.

A House floor vote elevated the third-term congressman to a speaker’s chair that has been vacant since Representative Kevin McCarthy was removed on October 3rd. In the weeks that followed, House Republicans considered three possible replacements, Representatives Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan, and Tom Emmer, who all failed to secure enough votes to become speaker. Johnson was able to clinch the speakership role in a 220 to 209 vote, with no Republicans voting against him. All Democrats voted for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

After taking the gavel Johnson declared, “The People’s House is back in business.” While the House was without a speaker, lawmakers were unable to take up any legislation, including bills to fund the federal government before November 17 and aid packages to U.S. allies, Ukraine and Israel.
