Maine shooting leaves 18 deceased

A gunman in Maine left 18 individuals dead when he opened fire around 7 PM at a bowling alley on Wednesday night, prompting a shelter-in-place advisory for residents of the town of Lewiston.

Police have identified the suspect as 40-year-old Robert Card of Bowdoin, Maine. According to Maine Governor Janet Mills, another 13 individuals were injured on top of the deceased. During a press conference, Mills called the incident a “dark day for Maine” and called residents of the state “strong…resilient…and a very caring people.” Local officials in Maine confirmed that Card is a certified firearms instructor and a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. At this time, the motive for Card’s actions is unknown.

Lewiston is Maine’s second-largest city and is located roughly 36 miles north of Portland. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, over 35K lives have been lost to all causes related to gun violence in the U.S. this year.

Georgia to redraw congressional maps

A federal judge has ruled that Georgia’s redrawn congressional maps violate the Voting Rights Act and gave the state's lawmakers until December 8 to submit new ones.

In a 516-page order, U.S. District Judge Steve Jones ordered the state to draw an additional Black-majority congressional district, two new Black-majority districts in Georgia's state Senate, and five new Black-majority districts in its state House. According to the order, despite Georgia’s population increase between 2010 and 2020 being attributable to growth among non-white populations, the number of congressional and state Senate districts with a Black majority remained the same, violating the Voting Rights Act. Shortly after the ruling, Governor Brian Kemp called a special session of the Georgia General Assembly for November 29 to draw new congressional and legislative maps.

Court challenges over other congressional maps are pending across the country. This decision comes just months after the U.S. Supreme Court issued a similar ruling regarding Alabama’s congressional maps.

‘Spider-Man 2’ developer’s flag mixup

Insomniac Games has issued a downloadable update to its PlayStation 5 game, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, that replaces Cuban flags with Puerto Rican flags after mixing the two up.

Players of the game took to social media to ask developers to correct a few scenes, which confused the Puerto Rican and the Cuban flags in the home and neighborhood of Spider-Man Miles Morales, who is of Puerto Rican descent. While the flags are designed similarly, with a single star inside a triangle and three colored stripes accompanied by two white stripes, their colors are inverted. In response, Insomniac promised a fix and posted an apology to X, formerly known as Twitter.

The Spider-Man sequel came out last Friday as the first PlayStation 5-exclusive game in the franchise. With more than 2.5 million copies sold in its first 24 hours, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 broke the record as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in a day.
