Israel expands ground operation

Over the weekend, the Israeli military expanded its ground operation in Gaza while also ramping up its bombardment of the Strip, targeting what the IDF said was Hamas infrastructure.

The Israeli military announced yesterday that it had struck more than 450 militant targets over 24 hours, including Hamas command centers and anti-tank missile launching positions. Meanwhile, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, the Palestinian death toll since the start of the war has surpassed 8K. Late Friday, Gaza experienced a near-total communication blackout after an Israeli bombardment knocked out phone and internet services. Communications were restored to most of Gaza’s 2.3M people yesterday.

Prior to Israel's expansion of its ground operations, Israel ordered more than 1M Palestinians in the northern part of the Strip to evacuate to the south. It comes nearly three weeks after Hamas killed 1.4K people in the October 7 terrorist attack on Israel, where they took over 200 people hostage.

Trump’s gag order reinstated

Former President Donald Trump’s narrow gag order in his federal 2020 election interference case was reimposed yesterday by a federal judge.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan had granted Trump's defense team an administrative stay, meaning the gag order was on hold while the defense pursued an appeal. Yesterday, however, Chutkan signed an opinion that lifted her October 20th stay, essentially putting the gag order back into effect. The order prohibits Trump from making statements about potential witnesses or disparaging comments about the prosecutors. Trump’s lawyers have said they will seek an emergency stay of the order from the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Last week, the American Civil Liberties Union filed an amicus brief in support of the former president, arguing that the gag order is unconstitutional. The D.C.-based Chutkhan's gag order is separate from the one issued by a judge in New York overseeing Trump's civil fraud trial.

Matthew Perry dies at 54

Matthew Perry, who rose to fame on the sitcom Friends, in which he portrayed Chandler Bing, was found dead on Saturday at the age of 54.

Perry was found dead in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home, according to law enforcement officials, with no evidence of foul play. No official cause of death has been released. Perry was best known for his role on NBC’s Friends, which ran from 1994 until 2004. In 2002, he earned an Emmy nomination for his performance on the beloved sitcom. Perry also scored two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role in The West Wing.

In 2022, Perry released his memoir titled Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. In the book, the actor chronicled his struggles with substance use, as well as his complicated relationship with the spotlight. On Sunday, Perry’s book was ranked number one on Amazon, supplanting Britney Spears’ memoir.
