Gaza refugee camp strike

At least 50 people have been killed in an Israeli air raid on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, according to Palestinian authorities.

According to a statement by the Israel Defense Forces, the airstrike targeted and killed Ibrahim Biari, whom it described as one of the Hamas commanders responsible for the October 7 attack on Israel. Hamas however, has denied the presence of its leaders in the camp. Per Gaza’s Interior Ministry, at least six airstrikes destroyed a number of apartment blocks in a residential area of the Jabalia refugee camp on Gaza City’s outskirts. Jabalia is the largest of the Gaza Strip's eight refugee camps, with 116K registered residents in the area.

Israeli ground forces, meanwhile, continue to advance towards some of northern Gaza's most populated areas, including Jabalia. On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected calls for a cease-fire, following the first successful rescue of a captive held by Hamas.

Jack Lew Senate confirmation

Former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew was confirmed by the Senate yesterday to serve as President Joe Biden’s ambassador to Israel.

The U.S. has been without a Senate-confirmed ambassador to Israel since July when Tom Nides departed the post. President Biden had previously nominated Lew in September to fill the role. The Senate voted to approve Lew's nomination 53-43. Lew had faced some opposition due to his past involvement in the Iran nuclear deal. Last week, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to advance Lew's nomination largely along party lines. Lew has said that as ambassador he would work "to end the horrific attacks by Hamas" and make sure Israel has all "it needs to defend itself".

Lew held several positions during the Obama administration, including Treasury Secretary between 2013 and 2017 and White House chief of staff. Lew’s confirmation comes as the Israel-Hamas war entered its 25th day yesterday.

Man found dead at amusement park

A man armed with firearms and explosive devices was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at a Colorado amusement park.

According to authorities, the man, who appeared to be planning to carry out a shooting at a mountaintop amusement park at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Colorado, killed himself before executing his plan. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said park officials found the 20-year-old inside the park before it opened to the public, apparently having broken in. A message saying, “I am not a killer, I just wanted to get into the caves,” was written on a wall of the bathroom where his body was found lying on the floor.

The park, which is surrounded by state-owned public land, is on a mountain above the Colorado River, where it hosts cave tours. The FBI is assisting in the ongoing investigation and said it would go through the man's cell phone and social media accounts and conduct interviews to learn more about him and what he intended.
