Gaza border opens for evacuations

Ambulances have taken 76 severely injured Palestinians from Gaza into Egypt for the first time since the war between Hamas and Israel began.

Egyptian and Palestinian officials opened the Rafah crossing to allow injured civilians and an agreed-upon list of around 500 foreign nationals to evacuate. The U.S. State Department said some American citizens were among those who left, without giving specifics. The crossings followed a deal involving Egypt, Hamas, and Israel that was mediated by Qatar in coordination with U.S. officials. The deal covers several days of transfers, with Egypt controlling who gets to cross and when.

More than 2M people have been stranded inside the Gaza Strip since Hamas’ October 7 attack prompted Israel to close its borders with Gaza. Egypt has said it will not accept an influx of Palestinian refugees because of fears Israel will not allow them to return to Gaza after the war.

Santos survives expulsion efforts

The House voted down a resolution to expel Representative George Santos over his admitted fabrications on the 2022 campaign trail and his two federal indictments.

The resolution received 179 votes, while 213 voted against it. The House Ethics Committee announced Tuesday that it will share the next steps regarding its investigation into Santos by November 17, citing the depth of its investigation with some 40 witnesses contacted and the issuance of 37 subpoenas. In May, the New York representative was indicted on 13 counts, including charges of wire fraud and money laundering. A superseding indictment in October charged him with 10 more counts. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Five House members have been expelled in U.S. history, three of them for fighting for the Confederacy during the Civil War. The most recent was Representative James Traficant, who was expelled on a near-unanimous vote in 2002 after he was convicted of federal bribery, fraud, and other charges.

Rangers clinch World Series 2023

The Texas Rangers have secured the club’s first World Series title in their franchise history of 63 seasons following a 5-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 5.

Game five was kept scoreless until the Rangers' offense broke through against the Diamondbacks in the seventh, earning one run. The Texas team then closed the game with four runs in the ninth. The Rangers finished with an 11-0 record on the road in the postseason, capping the Fall Classic with three straight victories in the desert. No team had ever achieved more than eight victories in a row in the playoffs. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy also became the sixth manager to secure four World Series championships.

The Rangers have appeared in two World Series before this year, losing to both the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals in 2010 and 2011, respectively. With the Rangers’ success, five teams in Major League Baseball have yet to earn a World Series title.
